For the photos we take, mainly on holiday, we have a cheap as chips Nikon Coolpix P330. It’s ok but tiresome having to download everything to the computer when we get home, especially if we want to send them on anywhere. Not being anything more than holiday snappers, is there an alternative that’s not going to cost an arm and leg?

As this thread has reappeared again, anyone mind if I bump up an earlier question?

Sid, I believe that the Nikon model myself and mcsimmo are talking about has Bluetooth to send photos to another storage device such as laptops, iPad etc.

Thanks Jules but that all looks a little grand for what we want. We're really only holiday snappers, hence our present little Nikon, its just a pita downloading everything to the home computer afterwards. Something that would allow instant wi-fi connection and transfer would be much more useful. Perhaps we'll have to go the 'grand' route?

Nikon have an app called SnapBridge, which can link to my camera and transfer my photos to my Ipad or Iphone directly.

The app compresses (or some trickery thing) the size of the photo to 2 MB, which means its very easy to forward in a text, Whatsapp or email. Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

Thanks for the heads up. I've since had a quick search on line and it looks as if there are in fact small compacts out there, with wi-fI connectivity and a reputable name, for under £200. Their sales pitch suggests they'll do what we want, namely email pictures directly off the camera, so may have to investigate further.
Anyone using one?

Use your phone......a decent phone will give you great “holiday” pics.......I was professional for over 40 years......I think I only ever use the phone now, and that’s a third “hand me down” iPhone something or other, I am bias though....lugging so much equipment for all those years has made me bitter and (literally) twisted.....so ignore me, what ever makes you feel like snapping will make you snap better Thumbs Up Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Yep, use a smart phone if you have one for everyday photography. By way of example, my DSLR cost over 2K (without a lens) but for many undemanding shots at a standard focal length of 35 or 50mm the poxy little camera on my half ancient Blackberry mobile actually gives better pickies...…

Gone for the Nikon 3500 with an all in lens McSimmo Thumbs Up

Can see what folk on about with phones but this is for all the wildlife over here with me and my planned around the world adventure!

Nice and light and not several different lenses which not only add weight but do you REALLY need them? If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

must admit, for most wildlife you need a long lens, most of which cost a fortune to add to any camera, I managed to buy the widely accepted best superzoom around for just over a grand second hand (yes expensive) the SONY RX10 IV , it is a brilliant camera with a 600mm zoom via a Zeiss lens. my shots have got a whole lot better, photos of birds in flight, close ups of insects at 600mm, I have always mainly been a landscape photographer, but this camera offers more variations.

Agree with Northcroft about a good “wildlife” camera that is not too big and heavy, the Sony bridge camera is a cracker, still a bit big to carry for the occasional picture but for a dedicated trip or day out it is a very good choice Thumbs Up

You can of course go the full DSLR route but buying a lens that will give you decent wildlife captures is going to be bl00dy expensive and an outlay that could easily match the cost of a good FL2 on the drive.

But as I said above, any camera that makes you feel like snapping will bring rewards, just don’t be surprised if after four hours lugging 20lbs of shiney metal around you’d wish you’d bought the little camera Laughing Regards
