To the photography enthusiasts

Been sorting through some of my dads old stuff in the attic whilst fetching some Christmas decorations down and came across some gems. Any thoughts on value? eBay suggests between £100 and £200 for the camera alone.

Camera and lens have a limited value but the rest won’t be worth much. In its day it was a expensive bit of kit.

Check that the camera has no old battery within leeching. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Sentimental value only although a great camera in its day. A collector might want an absolutely mint condition AE1 and immaculate glass but many hundreds of thousands of them made and the FD lenses while optically great are not the rarer and collectible fast ones. The electronics might still work in the AE1 with a fresh battery, flash gun and light meter may have given up. Buy a roll of slide film and re-discover the joy of wet chemistry photography. Get the film scanned to a cd - Fuji labs are best and enjoy the results.

I have to agree, its more likely people would want an old camera as an ornament, often seen for £10 in charity shops, a good old lens can still be used these days with many an adaptor to fit different mounts, however that 135mm lens looks like it could be full of mould, your photo of it suggests its either dirty outside the glass or mouldy inside Big Cry moisture is a killer . . . 2017 SEAT Ateca 4drive 2.0 xcellence (May 2022 -

yes I would agree, I have a few old cameras of a similar vintage and in as new condition.

but unfortunately not worth much, but nice to look at.

I had piles of 35mm, including 3 bodies & 2 motor drives, gave it all to a student who was interested in film photography. Kept the flash which I use occasionally. Other than that throw it in the bin. Also have a pile of 67 medium format, 2 bodies, 6 lenses, which I quite haven't been able to put in the bin yet. Door stop material at best. Some of my better 45 medium format lens I use on my Canon via an adaptor.

Currently got the Canon setup with Mamyia 80mm macro plus 2 extensions via adaptor photographing old Velvia slides. Better than a scanner. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Doc, rather than Ebay, speak with Howard Parker at West Yorkshire Cameras - they are in the centre of Leeds.

wycameras.com

They only deal in film equipment and I've found from first hand experience that they give honest valuations and a very good service. I've sold 3 film cameras to them and they actually upped the initial "distance" £offer without prompting once they received the cameras.

Highly recommended, and they even got a nice write up in the Telegraph recently.

Good luck.

The problem with photographic equipment is that it depreciates faster than JLR cars. Even electronic DSLR cameras have little second hand value after a four or five years in my experience. As for film cameras just look on eBay at cameras like the Canon T90, which was one of Canon's most sophisticated film cameras, now at give away prices and there are loads available with no bids. Best to keep them and eventually they will become collectors items but not for a long time yet. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Just remembered, if you want a couple of expensive Hassleblad cameras there are a couple on the Moon left by Apollo astronauts. Apparently NASA said that they are free to anyone who wants them. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I had a Minolta X-300 which I traded for an X-700 with a data back and motor winder. I still have that along with a yet another X-700, a Minolta Dynax 3000i. There is also a selection lenses, flashes, filters etc and a bit of collection of both film and digital point and shoot cameras.

My current DSLR is an Olympus E-510 with a couple of lenses and (what I recall as being viciously expensive) an Olympus flash that I obviously felt I needed at some point ... all of which is rarely used as my camera of choice these days tends to be my iPhone.

Never bothered trying to sell any of because largely, digital kit is out of date and worthless the day after it is bought, 35mm stuff is likely worth less than the effort I'd have to put into selling it and any of the othe short-lived film formats... can you still get those film cartridges?

Olympus Flash apart, I don't think any of it owes me anything - I enjoyed them all whilst they were 'current'.

I had 3 of the X-700 great camera. The 20mm lens was good. 24mm was rubbish. The 250mm mirror lens was brilliant & so compact, actually had 2 of them, found a second one & bought it as a spare. Probably the one lens that would have been worth keeping! But the gear found a good home & I had never seen a person so happy to get a pile of old stuff that I was very close to putting in the bin at the time as I could not be bothered wasting time & effort on. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

For the photos we take, mainly on holiday, we have a cheap as chips Nikon Coolpix P330. It’s ok but tiresome having to download everything to the computer when we get home, especially if we want to send them on anywhere. Not being anything more than holiday snappers, is there an alternative that’s not going to cost an arm and leg?
