Thanks envee, I am also sure that the specialised Bluetooth hearing route is best, but I will try the cheaper alternatives first.

I will start with DennisV's microphone idea first although I am unsure that a mic will work without a pre-amp, and of course issues with amplifying background noise and feedback.

I notice that motorbike systems have amps with 'squelch' systems built in to overcome these problems.

Have you thought about making the car quieter. It has made a big improvement adding acoustic insulation. My all terrain tyres are not too bad but if the car had road tyres, & acoustic foam in them like Tesla has, then that would be the last thing to complete the job.

Bought a cheap £5 (PC) microphone. It did not work, I could hear the inline on/off switch clicking but no audio even with the FL2 Aux-in volume turned right up.

So on with the next idea. At least now I have a great little boom mic to use if necessary.

The electronic audio world has two common signal levels. Think of it as two radically different "volume" levels. "Mic level" signals come out of microphones. "Line level" signals are used to pass among devices like this. An "Aux in" port expects a line level signal. Plug a microphone into it and it won't be loud enough. With what I have learnt on 1 car with acoustic insulation I have a gut feel that a tyre with the correct acoustic material, both density & size will make a considerable difference. I would hunt around the internet for comparisons.

New tyres with full depth sipes are quieter than old tyres.

People can spend $10k on an hearing aid & have virtually no improvement.

If you want to start with the easier bits with the car. Line the boot under the spare tyre & do the door panels to build up some confidence. Once you start removing panels you see how simply the car is put together. Door cables & electrical connections simply unclip & easier to clip back in.

It's a bit why I got carried away & kept doing more & more. When removing a door panel put the window down first as it is easier to line up & clip back in the door release cable. There are also 2 screws behind the door handle cover trim which unclips from the bottom being pretty firm forcing it loose.

I think the quietest road tyres, & insulating boot & doors will make a very worthwhile improvement in reducing noise. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

A friend of mine has NHS hearing aids (look to be the standard ones as they look the same as mine). He has a mike that hangs round his neck and bluetooths to the aids as well as to his phone. All free on the NHS. I suspect the standard NHS aids all have a Bluetooth capability, as mine can talk to each other! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

I have chosen the solution below and it seems to be working ok.

I have a blue tooth intercomm mic above my head on the drivers side, and I have modified an old headset for my wife which recieves my speech.
(Although the intercomm set is fully duplex, at the moment I can hear everything my wife says without any aids!)
(The headset is hung on window so that it is visible.

2 USB to Micro USB leads allow charging in situ.
