Blind Spot Monitoring Retrofit “COMPLETED”

With all my playing around with the wing mirrors on my Freelander 2 with the Surround Cameras got me to thinking about “Blind Spot Monitoring” feature. L359 never had Blind Spot Monitoring as an option but I have found the CCF field associated with activating it.
The first and biggest hurdle is cosmetic as Blind Spot Monitoring is indicated to the driver via the wing mirrors by a warning symbol embedded in the glass.
L359 glass doesn’t have it, neither did L320 or L319 prior to MY14. This left me with a problem of finding a mirror glass that would fit.
Well, today I just learnt that L322 Range Rover Vogue has the same mirror :lol:and there you have it. I now have the part that will allow me to add the BSM indicator as well as Electrochromic feature which is run off the interior Electrochromatic interior rear view mirror.

Still a fair amount of research to do on this and haven’t finished a couple of other projects so will update once I’ve done a bit more work but for now this project is a goer! Laughing MY15

Calibration, that's gonna be the killer, and something you're gonna struggle to change in any ECU.

Given how long it takes to get it calibrated correctly, i'm betting its not straight forward!

Do it, so I can Very Happy

I'm starting to thing it would have cheaper for both of us if we had just bought a late L320 and paid for the fuel Laughing

Laughing noooooooooooo this is too much fun and besides if we has L320’s we’d have no time to do this stuff as we’d be repairing it all the time Laughing no offence to any L320 owners.
Well, I need to make a disclaimer, whilst I fully intend to see if I can add via CAN my “plan b” will be to integrate the BSM feature with the L322 wing mirror glass using an aftermarket system which are readily available.
Bit early to make that call yet but the fact the glass is available has made this possible.
The Chromatic feature seems quite straight forward and possibly not even requiring CCF editing. MY15

The Freelander has so much glass real estate that you don't need blind spot monitoring & the mirrors are so large you can see around corners!

What would be nice is double glazing. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

If there are no challenges one may as well take a rope!

The double glazing was for sound. I noticed while I had the door panel off, pulled out the draft & noise sealing strip against the inside face of the glass, to give it a clean, they have two strips pressing against the glass. You only see the top strip against the glass when in place.

As far as I am aware they trim this rubber strip back when you get window tinting so the tinting doesn't get scratched over the long term with dust & dirt. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I assume the BSM uses the reverse parking sensors to “see” but I bet they are the side sensors used for auto park (which we also don’t have).....unless of course there is some black magic radar box behind the rear bumper, do we know?

You do love a challenge Bow down Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again......

Haven’t had time to log onto topix and have a look at an electrical schematic for BSM as yet but as the BSM has been around on JLR platforms, ie L322 since around 2009 it’s highly likely the SW exists on the MY15 L359. There is a module for BSM whether it uses the outboard pdc sensors is probably unlikely as the system usually uses microwave sensing rather than ultrasonic. More likely there are 2 stand alone microwave sensors.
What’s important is that the main bit you see, the wing mirror glass indicators exist for L359 wing mirror housings and I can make the system work either by adding the hardware to the CAN and activating in the CCF or by using a stand alone aftermarket system which should integrate seamlessly. (I hope :lol)
Nothing like a bit of research and discovery to keep it interesting Laughing MY15

There’s a left and right sensor linked into the CAN and they have a LIN between left and right sensor and feed to the mirrors. Quite simple really, the difficult part is getting the CAN/BCM to work with them as there is also a dash display. As Stuart has said, there is an option in the CCF for most of the cars of this era and I’ve activated mine but get no fault codes or even an indication. I will be persistent though.

There appears to be 5 Hex’s in L359

0x00 Undefined
0x01 not fitted
0x02 Blind Spot with Camera
0x03 Blind Spot with radar direct led
0x04 Blind Spot with radar CAN led

I haven’t checked the legacy block as yet, did you activate a field in there ?
From memory I seem to remember a field called “Side Object Detection” or something like that. Was that the field you activated? I’m pretty sure in L359 the EUCD field is the correct activation, for L320 may be in the Legacy Block?

I’ve also checked L538 so I’m confident the SW is in L359 BCM. The question will be is it in the IPC’S IPMB otherwise I could be in the same boat as you.

I’m still pouring over all the info but there appears to be 2 systems and I’ve also noticed that there is modules with 6 pin layout v 8 pin layout.
L322 used the 6 pin layout while L319 appeared to use the 8 and seems to have a private CAN between the rear bumper modules. I’m starting to see that this is where 0x03 and 0x04 are coming in. MY15

So change of Ccf to 0x03 and no change or command centre options but no real surprises there as no modules online as yet and I haven’t done a rescan for dtc’s.

BSM mirrors on their way!

One of two BSM Modules here but going to try integrating with into CAN before committing to second module. Oh and btw the plug is the same as the MAF Sensor plug but uses all six positions.

Have both BSM plugs already so just need to source The Electrochromatic sockets which are proving to be a challenge atm🤔 and build door harness.

Waiting, waiting, waiting! MY15
