Blimey, how much is diesel where you are normally then? I was moaning to the wife on Sunday because they had put it up here to £124.7.....looks like I'm in one of the "cheaper" regions!

It looks like you may be and I'm in one of the rip off areas. It almost seems as though the farther away from an oil refinery the cheaper it is. ( no research involved )

You might well be right in that assertion....one of the cheapest places in the country, perversely, is Watford in Herts....nowhere near a refinery (not since Buncefield in Hemel Hempstead went bang a few years ago!)

MPG v Computer

Deano64 wrote:
My MPG ( according to the computer) seems to be lower recently than it has been in former times. I used to get it up to ~ 40-42 mpg on my way to work ( it always got better at the end of journey since there's a 5 mile stretch of motorway that moves a bit better and its downhill). I now seem to be getting 35 mpg max on same journey and today I didn't even get to 30 mpg. Maybe because its cold or some DPF regen was going on today ? Not due for a service for ~ 8 months so just wondered about the increase in consumption

Hi All
Just done a 1100 mile round trip down south to Reading from Fife, Scotland.
I did a full to brim-to-brim test going down, refilled when I got down there, Averaged 38.3mpg, better coming back at 40.2, overall average 39.25. pretty happy with that considering my HSE Auto (MY08) has 90k on the clockand we weren't hanging about! Mix of all roads M8, M9, M74 Dual Carriageways, M6, M42, M40 A40 etc... plus some town driving, (not too mention Road Works and Detours!)

BUT... the Avg.MPG on the Computer was 34.1? so the the actual was 5+mpg more?

AND... the 'Range' always shows a max of about 470... so in theory no chance of getting down on one tank full (465 miles door to door) but we did easily! ..... the range goes to ZERO when I still have 1/4 tank left!!

Anyone had experience of this and if it is possible to re-calibrate the Computer?

My quoted range on the computer has always seemed pretty accurate, normally about 540 miles when full (although I once saw it above 600) shows about 50 when the low-fuel warning pings in.

A couple of weeks ago it did a strange thing - it is normally back up to full reading by the time I drive out of the filling station but on this occasion it very slowly scrolled up through the numbers while I drove and took a mile or so to reach its usual figure. I worried that the sender might be sticking, but the gauge was showing full, so that doesn’t explain it. Hasn’t done it since. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

The range indicated I get is similar to yours Worms. It is not possible to get an accurate range prediction as measuring accurately the quantity of fuel slopping around in a tank is not possible. Also, the computer can only have information about the mpg you have previously achieved and it cannot predict how, where and when you will drive so at best range is only a guestimate.

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 eD4 GS Manual Galway Green

My 2011 Manuel ED4 GS 116K

Mine gives around 600 to 700 miles according to the car, i do use the app 'fuel monitor', which tracks actual consumption to mileage and driving it down to london approx 200 miles each way for the last couple on months once a week means that recently i've been getting around 45mpg thats cruising at 65 mph (a tip i picked up that means you overtake the HGV's but don't get stuck too much in a queue in the outside lane in a 3 lane road) , overall having done 16,000 miles since having the app logging I'm averaging 42.7mpg , this is an ED4 GS not driven like a hooligan, I keep in my mind that full tank gives about 600 miles and fill up around the car display saying i've 100-150 miles range left in the tank, i generally use supermarket fuel for 3 tanks then Esso, Shell or BP for 1 tank

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Barolo Black

my manual my09 TD4 with 95K is doing circa 40 mpg which is ok for me. One thing I've noticed is that long runs only add a small improvement to the consumption. For example this weekend saw a really leisurely 500 miles on the motorway between North Wales and the northern Lakes, all at circa 60 mph which returned just over 42mpg. Comparing that to my more normal short journeys on rural roads and some fast dual carriageway which returns 40mpg.

In previous and my other current vehicles the difference between these journey types is much greater.

I'm by no means a hypermiler but I do believe in anticipation while driving, I can normally squeeze a lot of miles out of a gallon. I do like to 'watch' mpg as an indicator of changes and potential faults.

What I have also noticed is that with all previous diesels I can normally see a slight improvement with Vpower or Ultra but in the freelander (if anything) they are marginally worse than Morisons best.

20.3 Mpg over 2112 miles on holiday to south of France, including a quick hop over the boder into Spain and back
90% of those miles were towing a heavyily laden twin axle caravan with 4 bikes on the roof of the car and mainly on motorway type roads. Some seriously steep hills had the car working hard and dropping several gears which did nothing for the economy. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Just back from a journey in one of the work cars, a VW Sharan. Mix of motorway, town centre and fast B roads. Showing an indicated 49mpg on its trip computer. Not a bad return for a big 7 seater, pity the Fl2 doesn't even come close! Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

If fuel economy really is high on your list of things that matter you could always trade up to a 2 wheel drive Freelander2.

Same driving comfort, no Haldex or diff problems, better fuel economy - but you will feel such a pratt if you get stuck on wet grass trying to tow a trailer Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

65078 miles, short drives, traffic jams, motorways and A roads “making progress” to Scottish single track roads with passing places and a little off road gets me a running average of 33.37 MPG. Min 26.6 and max 41 mpg, brim to brim.
