I forget the name but I was considering a similar solar powered TPMS because you could add extra sensors for a trailer or caravan which I thought would be useful. It recorded both tyre pressure and temperature and had an audible alarm to warn of pressure loss. As my new car now has TPMS I could just get a cheap system and fit the sensors to my trailer and caravan instead I suppose. I`m away to have a search on Ebay! Thumbs Up

Get a second setup for a trailer so you can set the pressure warning at a different level. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I live near the M5 going south past Bristol. From what I see, a TPMS is more necessary for the Caravan/Trailer than the car.
Although I do think that people are keeping the caravan tyres in a better condition now than a few years ago when the hard shoulder was populated by trailers and caravans awaiting tyres. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

This system shows tyre temp too and has for tyre pressure accuracy it's bang on. Only got it because when leaving home for work and returning home it's always dark so tend not to notice a near flat tyres and I nearly lost a tyre/wheel few weeks back. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

I destroyed a tyre in remote north west Australia, with only one more spare at the next town bought TPMS. We got 3 more flat tyres for the remainder of the trip which I plugged before any damage was done. TPMS well & truely paid for itself. Even more so in the outback as it can cost thousands to get a new tyre & then you have to get it on the rim when you are stuck beyond the black stump. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hinchy, looked at these on eBay, cheap no doubt and I am interested, however I guess the TPM caps just replace the valve covers, but what are the 4 nuts for?

You tighten the nut back up against the transmitter so it locks it on so it is less likely to come off.

Adjusting tyre pressures a few times a day is a little irritating at first but you get into an efficient routine after about half a dozen cycles.

Put a piece of fluorescent tape or tag on the small spanner so you do not loose it.

Also be aware that the transmitter can leak air so make sure everything is spotlessly clean before putting it on. I did have one very slow leak from this situation. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Read a review of one of these kits that found after a few months that the little nuts corroded and seized onto the valve threads making it a sod to get off to inflate tyre.

Might be worth checking periodically. Learned to drive in 2011.

How do they work ?
Do these pick up the signals from the original TPMS sensors in late (2014) FL2 ? Jules

The 4 nuts are locking nuts when you screw the new valve caps on replacing the old dust caps. The value caps have a battery in each of them, the same battery type you have in a fob. Each cap is mark up to correspond for each wheel. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

I have a Snooper Tirepilot TMPS that I bought to monitor car and caravan when we went on long European tour 18 months ago.

Now though, the sensors are going faulty. Think it might be corrosion inside them as there is some verdigris to be seen.

Would suggest if you have these external sensor types you consider packing with vaseline or similar to keep damp out. I know they have a seal built in, but every little helps. Wish I had known, and done this.

They are expensive to replace. Andy

Lightwater,

I have a slow leak on one of the tires for my Volvo S80

It could be the TPMS.

What do you recommend I change and how is it done?

Can i just let the air out of the tire and rebuild the O-ring etc or do I need to remove the tire to get to the sensor?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

For reference I am loosing about 0.5 PSI per day.

So I need to fill the tire every other weekend or the warning will come on.

Thanks

Paul

We are using the external sensors, & when it is screwed on it presses in the valve pin to pressurise the sensor.

If you have an internal sensor maybe you can put on a metal valve cap with bit of rubber or O-ring inside.

Very slow leaks are a pain. Have you put a bit of soapy water on the end of the valve to test for air leaking.

Have you looked extremely closely at the tyre for a screw, they can be very hard to see. Put soapy water over the tyre & see if there are small bubbles. Probably easier to take the wheel off to do this.

I bet there is the remains of a small screw in the tread hiding somewhere. A pair of long nose pliers & a new plug will fix the tyre. Once you have repaired one tyre yourself you won't bother with a garage again. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
