3.2 Thermostat replacement

All,

My Land Rover is 10 years old and I decided to replace the thermostat and a couple of hoses as preventative maintenance

Here are some pictures of the fun

The hardest part is getting the intake manifold out

Parts replaced

LR006071 - Thermostat

LR001491 - Screw for Thermostat (Qty 4)

LR001442 - Coolant Hose for heat exchanger

LR000491 - Bolt for Heat exchanger hose

LR001505 - O-Ring for heat exchanger hose

LR005564 - Coolant Hose (because I'm paranoid) - (see the last picture)

LR000078 - Clip for small coolant line - (No picture, I broke the last one so I bought a new one)




Intake pipe will need to come out




Lower Clamp for intake pipe and Bolts for the manifold




Seven Bolts, Small Coolant Hose (Pinch the flat faces, but drain the coolant first), Remove connector for Fuel Pressure sending unit (Remove the Screw and rotate the sensor up)




Remove All of these Electrical connectors, and the Hose for fuel vapor recovery




Actual Manifold removed




Thermostat Removed (Nice and clean inside)




Coolant Hose, Old vs. New (Old broke while removing, don't forget to remove the broken piece from the block)




This is where the coolant hose goes




Lot's of room now that everything is removed




I didn't label these connectors when I removed them and I thought that I might install them backwards but they are Keyed to prevent this. (This is for the intake flap valves)




Replaced this hose as well - because a Volvo owner with 300,000 miles had this hose fail on him and I didn't want that to happen to me "Only the paranoid survive" A. Grove



10 years from now when it's time to do it again I'll will be able to do it faster.

I agree it’s a lot of work for a thermostat

One last though if you replace your thermostat also replace the small coolant hose shown above, it a know failure point

I've been having a good discussion on the Volvo board about the Thermostat.

The consensus is that the Thermostat is prone to failure at about 10 years.

I just replaced my Thermostat on my Volvo with the 3.2

All,

I am adding two more parts that should be changed when replacing the manifold

LR019341 - engine to expansion tank coolant hose

I should have replaced this part, I didn't and it started leaking slowly after a few months




LR001454 - intake manifold gasket Qty 6 needed

I bought aftermarket parts from Victor Reinz and the quality appears excellent and the cost was very low

Thanks for the pictures its really helpful. The only issue i am having is getting the intake past the water inlet for the expansion tank hose. The outlet on my 08 is 2 1/2 inches and no matter what i try, the intake will not go by it. Am i missing something? i really really don't want to pull that out of the block. THANKS

There isn’t much space to remove the manifold.

I removed the inlet pipe with a hex key 3 mm or 4 mm I can’t remember

Another option is to lift the engine and remove the torque mount and loosened the top bolt for the motor mount and push the engine back toward the firewall

This is my first LR so I wasn’t sure how it comes out. So it just loosens out like a screw or bolt? It will defiantly have to come off. I just want to make sure I don’t break anything. Thanks a lot for your help.

Dave,

It might be possible to replace the Thermostat by removing the Headlight instead of the intake manifold

However the coolant that Land Rover used is not very friendly on the seals.

I found it very difficult to remove the hose from the thermostat housing

For comparison the hose came off easily on the Volvo

The only difference is the Volvo coolant

I didn’t use the Land Rover coolant instead I switched to G13 VW coolant (for my LR2)

Next time I will just use the Volvo coolant in the Land Rover
