Finally took the plunge and got Stanley knife & soldering iron out to replace battery in errant key fob - it would start the car from the dock but not lock/unlock doors etc

Quite a fiddly job, and had to add magnifying glass to toolkit to see if solder good, but job done, and once charged up a bit in the dock for a short trip I now have two fully functioning keys - and saved about £200 quid for a new one in the process

Hi everyone, Yes you probably guessed I'm a windsurfer or something similar from the name. I'm new to this site as I wanted to know how to open the fob. just opened it and ordered a new battery, let you know how I get on. Thanks to everyone who gave advice. I am now about to replace my key fob battery a second time and the present VL2330 lasted about 2 years. I will be replacing the case because the original is becoming decrepit and I do not wish to have dust and dirt enter and interfere with the momentary switches mounted on the PCB.

Interestingly, I searched for the Panasonic information about the OEM battery supplied in the key-fob. The Panasonic VL2330 data sheet is in my gallery, however it clearly states that the battery has a life of about "1,000 cycles" (see table below). This indicates that the Panasonic battery should provide for provide for about 1 years use, assuming that one uses their Freelander 2 approximately three times per day, providing for about 1,000 charge cycles each year, and, assumes the fob discharge approximates to about 10% each cycle. However, one would doubt that it would lose 10% charge for the pulse to communicate and open the vehicle's doors.

I will leave the further technical discussion to other engineers and scientists to ponder.

The reason I am interested rather than doing it myself is that they claim to replace the casing with a new casing...just not sure of their service...anyone got any experience of this repairer??

Hmmm they will have your home address and the code for your car.

I replaced my battery last night and to be honest it's dead easy.
Prising the case apart is the trickiest bit to be honest, I used a nice sharp scalpel blade and it just pays to take it easy and not rush.
Once inside simply unsolder the battery and remove it from the circular plastic clip.
I did find a solder sucker useful as it enables you to remove the solder from the circuit board leaving the terminals exposed.
Refitting is pretty much the reverse although you need to bend the new terminals in to place so they line up with the existing holes in the board.

Once finished I used super glue to bond the two halves of the case together again, make sure you ensure the glue line is consistent all around the edge as I do believe the fob is supposed to be waterproof?

Job jobbed, all for the princely sum of £5.50 (for the battery) from a well known internet based auction site

Incidentally, I never set foot in the main dealers, but how much do they charge? Or do they just want to sell you a brand new fob? I bet it's eye watering
