FUEL ECONOMY/ POWER ISSUES - TD4 DIESEL

Hello all,

I have just had my dashboard replaced, nice shiny new one.

I am now facing an issue whereby my fuel consumption has increased 25 - 30% and i am experiencing a slight loss in power.

The LR dealer here says its not a problem and sent me on my merry way.

Have run all computer diagnostics, checked air, fuel filters etc, changed where i buy fuel etc etc.

any suggestions?

Why you need a new dash mate?

Take your car over a Dyno. Costs are about $30-$40 for two runs. Its the only way you can see if you have lost power and prove it to LR.

Thanks Dorko, i may have to do what you recommend.

The airbar cover on my dashboard had collapsed onto the airbag and had to be replaced.

i did a test over 1,200 k's and averaged 11l/100 km. I have the td4.

It used to average anywhere between 7 & 8.5l/ 100km.

Since the test 1 month ago, its doing more like 12, 13l/ 100km

Does seem high. I'm seeing 7 - 9 on the highway and 9.5 - 11 around town. Do you know if they upgraded the car's software at all? I have seen some significant changes in economy between diesel suppliers but it seems you may have covered this. Dusty conditions, could be the air filter? I'm not sure what the answer is.

That is very high. I drive my FL2 hard and i sit on 10-11L. But this includes runs offroad as well. If i stayed on highway drive i average 6.5L.

Seriously get the car Dyno and check the AFR (Air Fuel Ratio)

The reason of the high diesel consumption could be the clogging of the diesel injectors by (diesel) soot, a known problem with modern diesel engines. The only working cure I know of is the adding of 2-T oil to the diesel fuel. For details pls. read the thread "2-T oil to the diesel" some pages further down in this forum.

Jordan,

Check the pipe work from your air filter box to the back of the engine bay!

I had a problem of low power, making pulling out of junctions dangerous and also a couple of times at 50 mph the car refused to increase speed/revs.

I thought that it was dodgy fuel, but I have since found that a heat welded/bonded joint has failed on the pipework. The pipes had moved around and there was a 1cm gap between the pipes. The fix was easy - half a reel of electrical tape and the power returns!

If you follow the pipe from the air filter box towards the back of the engine you will find a corrugated section. The pipes are heat welded/bonded at the end of this section. The second section of pipe then goes to the back of the engine bay and the 'organ' pipes.

The car is in the garage now waiting for a new pipe.
