I was taught the same and still do, however I'd like to think today’s materials are such that wear would not be an issue. Personally I don't like the noise regardless of the wear issue.

FYI, the handbrake on our Freelander2 is a drum brake built into the rear disc hub. AND...you should always leave a car parked in gear or "Park" on an Auto. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE |

I always press the button as that is the way I was taught, the reason being that it prevents/reduces wear on the mechanism, and wear on the mechanism presents the risk of slipping.
