Handbook misprint?

Page 105

"Note: Do not press the parking brake release button when applying the parking brake"

I was always taught that this action would result in detrimental wear to the ratchet mechanism.Has technology moved on or is this a misprint?

I was taught the same and still do, however I'd like to think today’s materials are such that wear would not be an issue. Personally I don't like the noise regardless of the wear issue.

However thinking about this in terms of controlling the car I can see a reason for not holding the button. Maybe they think the ratchet will engage more positively if allowed to 'self set' rather than being released by the left thumb.

How does the handbrake work? Is it one unit on the rear prop shaft or are there separate units on each rear wheel? Is it drum or disc? It must be quite effective; I’ve seen a number of FL2’s parked and displayed in quite precarious positions where presumably they are only held by the parking brake.

FYI, the handbrake on our Freelander2 is a drum brake built into the rear disc hub. AND...you should always leave a car parked in gear or "Park" on an Auto. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

I always press the button as that is the way I was taught, the reason being that it prevents/reduces wear on the mechanism, and wear on the mechanism presents the risk of slipping.

However, a few years ago there was a case when the handbrake slipped off resulting in a nasty incident. In the ensuing court case, Ford (the manufacturer) claimed that the brake was not set correctly because the driver had pressed the button and this did not allow the parts to engage correctly and allowed the lever to slip. Ford went on to say that when applying to handbrake the button should not be pressed. Frankly, my view is that Ford said this to protect their own backside and to put the blame on the driver rather than a cheap and poorly produced component. As Ford's argument was accepted in court all manufacturers now say don't press the button - presumably to protect their backsides and with legal backing.
