Noisey steering pumps?

Hi all

Ok this is a random one for you. Have been told the noise im hearing is not the egr but its the second steering pump, and the head guy at my local dealers is telling me that 90% + of freelander 2s have noisey steering pumps and I quote ( ""they all do it"" )

He tried to explain that when you slow down, there is a second steering pump that turns on or switchs over to, that makes it easyer to turn while going slow, and once pulling away it swops back over to a more normal pump for higher speeds Shocked Question

Is this aload of bull? Plus when asked if their was a way of fixing such a problem I was told no they are all like it....?

Thoughts?

Cheers

Edit: Things I don't understand are, why has this only happened sinse they have fitted the egr, and why on my hawkeye does the noise happen only when the egr moves ( as seen on the hawkeye ), also why don't I hear any noise when the engine is not upto temp ( i.e cold ) shouldn't this make a noisey steering pump worse when cold? Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

Unless he is referring to some sort of pressure relief valve in the steering pump, did you notice a funny bovine type smell in the showroom? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

You are presumably aware of the well known steering reservoir filter problem which causes pump noise on turning? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Yeah read about that before, this noise only happens when you pull up and stop, or have the car ticking over for a long lengh of time. No steering input at all when you hear the noise. The only thing the guy could come up with is that they have had loads of freelander 2s in with the same so called noise and problem and that its the second steering pump that makes this noise and all they do it, and there is no fix Whistle Just seems to random to be true? Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

Fit one of these and most steering problems will be cured. No second pump I'm afraid!

Where abouts is the noise coming from? EGR is on the top and the power steering pump is on the drivers side of the engine at the bottom? You should be able to isolate which area it is coming from?

Installed a new reservoir and filter

Let me start by saying that I agree with Steve D and others on this post

And that I just replaced my reservoir with the built in filter screen

LR000578

In my case the fluid was discolored and I couldn't see the bottom of the reservoir thru the old fluid (99,000 miles)

I replace the fluid with Pentosin CHF 202 (Note: the fluid I used is green not red)

Nice you tube video here of the procedure (note: this is not my video)

In my case to flush the fluid I used the old and new reservoir as shown in the video but I briefly started the engine.

If you do it this way the engine can only run for 1 or 2 seconds or the you will run the reservoir dry.

Result

1. The engine runs smoother and quieter

2. My wife could actually tell the difference (lighter steering feel), now that is a result!!!!

Good Luck

Paul

Got her back now after them saying its probs the steering which sure its not, as they stated we only herd it a few times over 100miles on 6 different drives ) and on the drive back home I herd the noise 70% of the way back Laughing So I give up with taking it back there again. Going to do that filter change and see if that makes a difference, also got a egr blanking plate so might try that also Thumbs Up

Will update if the cure is ever found though ( wishful thinking ) Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto
