Good old Cat and Fiddle. If rain is forecast around here, it is highly likely to fall as snow up there. Over 1500ft ASL. Only 500ft where I live.

A measly 160ft in Derby which probably explains why we had a decent amount of snow one morning in April 2012 and yet there was nothing in Derby. The said snow in April followed a bit of a heatwave in March. Good old British weather Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

All the snow had melted by that night, but had a sprinkling this morning! There were at least 6 cars that I saw just on the Cat and Fiddle that were no longer on the road and in various states of smashed up.

BMW and Audi repair centres will be doing a cracking trade Thumbs Up

It's not snowing where I am as I live on the coast but just a few miles away it's snowing where my dealer is. Comes in handy when your selling a Landy. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

dangerous road that, I took a trip off road 2 years ago on the way the winter D3 camp. towed out of a deep ditch by a defender. police closed the road as several cars were coming a cropper on the black ice and snow
my own fault, going too fast and didn't have winter tyres on - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

Temps in double figures by midweek as mild returns and looks set to stay mostly in charge until the turn of the year at least sadly.

I wish this were true and that I had to pay out but I am just not buying into it (no pun intended)

http://realityweather.net/advanced-warning...r-weather/

"This has got to be one of the trickiest post I’ve had to do yet. Please read carefully. In previous updates, I mentioned that I was watching the possibility of cold weather developing between Xmas & the New Year. Although the models weren’t rushing into the idea, there are some other parameters I use that were giving strong hints of a more organized cold set up. Now it seems the models are gradually picking up on it.

The midnight American model run has picked up a cold spell arriving around Xmas eve from the NW, this would be in line I have been mentioning in my Xmas forecast for some time now, but then again, that is only one model run. I had put a quite an effort in creating the timing of that NW plunge using sequences related to recent patterns. However, data from the midnight Euro model run came out this morning, and this is also picking up some significant cold weather by the 26th. Again, this is just another model run and these signals are just a little beyond their confidence thresholds. However, to see two of them jump on the idea, certainly raises the possibilities although it is still not enough to set the concrete, but:-

Using some other hints, not going into detail of the parameters I mentioned earlier in the post, I find some interesting things. Firstly, no matter what happens, there will be a hell of a lot of cold air just to the north of us next week, and I have noticed that it’s boundary with milder air to the South, is not the usual jagged up and down boundary but a boundary that travels more in a straight line from east to west – this in turn would be a kinda contradiction to what usually would happen in a cold spell – many that are well up on weather patterns would see this, but I’ll stay out of that bit for now. If this ‘straight’ boundary were to sink far enough south to let the colder air to our shores, it would largely enhance the length of time that any colder air may stick around.

Getting to the point, it may just be moderately cold or even, very cold without the severe stuff for many with a lot of slop and slush but it seems there is now a very significant chance of much colder conditions setting in around Xmas, or a little after, and sticking around for a considerable length of time. There is a moderate chance it may be a spell of severe cold for many. Given that this setup follows through, northern areas would likely see some severe cold winter weather, especially Scotland, but other areas all the way to the south would be at a moderate to high risk too.Another thing I notice, is that other very active low pressure systems are threatening to be close to the south and if they line up in a position, where their northern flanks interact with the colder air right over the UK & Ireland, all hell could break loose, with heavy rain, sleet, snow & ice – the snow depending on the extent of the cold air.

So for now, I am saying there is a high chance of much colder conditions setting in around Xmas or a little after, and a moderate chance that severe cold weather may occur. Once this set up would be a certainty, then we will look at the possibility of snowfall etc. There is still many directions this could take, but if you are hoping for cold and snow, this maybe your time. Certainly, it will be the closest we get to a more significant cold spell since the record breaking March of 2013. Two things that would disintegrate this cold spell for the UK & Ireland are: 1: high pressure may stay stubbornly high to the south. 2. High pressure may build to the SW and may push the pattern east, out of harms way, before the colder air gets a chance to move south and engulf our shores. The colder idea currently looks the higher chanced option.

The good news is that there is not a severe threat in the run up to Xmas, but the possibilities should be kept in mind for the period following Xmas Day – at this stage, the door is open, and anything is possible! The bad news is that currently, it looks like it won’t be in time to benefit many of you who are hoping for a White Xmas.

I will be honest, and say it does look a little worrying as in the line of battle ground scenarios – these can deliver very large amounts of snow if it is cold enough, but then again, it may be just rain and slush. The American weather model went on to suggest this type of setup for the New Year, but this is way beyond any model’s threshold. I will discuss that it had upper temperatures (850 hpa / about 1.5 miles up) of around minus 4, whereas you would usually need around minus 7 or lower to bring severe winter conditions. However, if there has already been severe winter conditions, minus 4 uppers may not be enough to bring back milder conditions at surface level. What may happen in the long run is far from certain but certainly, always keep an open mind – while it has been quite generous so far, it may be a long, or even a hell of a winter yet !

I will update again very soon, so make sure and check the ‘forecast news & discussion’ section later tonight.

Oh well, doesn't look like things are going to pan out as predicted for January, jet stream didn't move south so looks like we are going to be chopping between mild and cold snaps for the foreseeable. Prefer that to last years winter though.

Really pleased that we had a generous dumping of snow here but it will melt tomorrow as temps hit 11C and heavy rain sets in. The south missed out though and milder temps have been in charge for a greater chunk of winter so far than cold.

Still not there yet with the prolonged cold and snow to be able to part with my money but there's still hope... LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

This was our rear garden on Sunday morning , the missus decided to go to the top and cut a couple of sprigs of a bush for a display , resulting in a fall and broken ankle .
