England 2013 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Auto Sumatra Black

I follow a few weather people on twitter, a few weather people are saying it will be a bad winter, all the signs are there so the twitter people are saying. BUT all the signs were there last year except some weather thing collapsed and we had a mild winter. At the end of the day the weather will do what it wants to do.

I do hope we get some snow, not just because I have a FL2 but I want to make a snowman and have a snowball fight with my 9 year old! Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

^ I must say I haven't heard feedback about those, so perhaps an owner with experience will be along soon. The Conti's M+S don't tend to get good reports in snow by owners but the Goodyear Wrangler M+S is excellent. I had those as standard on my FL2 and they coped very well in the 2010 winter. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

We have some impressive hills around here and the scorpions faired excellently in the snow, I have continentals on this car, not out of choice but in the interest of science I will try them over the winter and see how I get on with them, early indications, comparing them to the previous car, are that they are cr@p.

The idiot Madden is at it again and the Express have printed his crap! Evil or Very Mad

Madden and the Express were laughing stocks last winter when the prediction of coldest winter for 100 years with blizzards turned out to be one of the mildest and wettest ever. Egg on their faces doesn't cover it and yet here they are again.

No doubt he will spout the same crap for the next 10 years + and then boast if he gets one right Rolling Eyes

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Continental Contact 4x4 are OK when new but once they are down to about 4mm tread depth they are not much use. My original set were down to just below 4mm in the last serious snow and when I braked the car slid a little before stopping. I changed them for another set of the same tyres and at the same junction in the same conditions a day later the car stopped almost instantly.

Interestingly, in Austria you can use All Season tyres, such as the Continentals providing they have at least 4mm tread depth across the tyre.

Having said all that on my last Freelander I put Wranglers on and they felt better in all conditions.

Funny how its always a round number like 100 years, shouldn't it be the coldest winter for 101 years this year?

Madden aside, there are computer models and data, being interpreted by people who take this stuff seriously, that are giving indications we could be in for a especially cold one this year.

The Continental Cross Contact are poor in the winter, but then they are a Summer Tyre, surprising Land Rover actually fit them, at least the Wranglers are M+S rated.

Mine had a health ( Laughing ) check yesterday, they measured at 5mm front and 6mm rear, they will have to get me through the winter this year, not impressed with them though, seem to let go fairly quickly.

The Continental Contact 4x4 fitted to my Freelander are also M&S rated.

.M+S marking on tyres is very misleading.
Many AWD tyres are rated M+S, M&S or M/S, i.e., mud and snow. Established by the USA Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), the M+S designation refers only to the tread pattern. The M+S standard calls for a tyre with grooves at the outside of the tread that extend into the centre. It also means that 25% of the tyre tread contact surface be open, i.e., a more open tread pattern.

You will find the M+S symbol on most all-season tyres, on off-road and all-terrain tyres and even some high performance summer tyres may have this designation. However, there are no performance standards to meet or traction tests to pass. Any tyre with grooves at angles and with 25% of the tread void can be labelled as M+S.

And on icy snow and on ice, the open tread grooves have zero effect on performance. Control of the vehicle comes strictly from equal parts of the tyre rubber compound that provides adhesion and the effects from the tread sipes.

In 1999, the RMA defined a real “snow” or winter tyre with its severe snow-rating. Car and AWD tyres that pass this performance test and are embossed with the “snowflake on a mountain peak” icon. Severe snow-rated tyres must provide traction at least 10% better than a standard reference test tyre.

The off-road, all-terrain and all-season M+S tyres cannot pass this test. The M+S rating doesn’t mean much. The severe snow rating does.

I would like to be able to test out my Conti TS850 tyres this winter with the aforementioned snowflake symbol. Praised by the motoring press and experts but last winter was so rubbish and mild that they rarely came into their own.

+7C or lower and they will provide better grip and braking but I want to see just how good they are on snow. My FL2 was amazing on the Wranglers and better still on winter tyres but with 4WD to back it up.

This time it's FWD motoring for me so good progress on snow rests with the tyres and appropriate driving. Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
