Letter from Trading Standards re car mileage

A few weeks back we traded in my wife's car for a new one. We just received a letter from Trading Standards re vehiclke mileage check, asking us to confirm mileage & other details. It looks official but I wasn't expecting this; I thought this was nowadays included on the vehicle docs anyway. Are we bound to respond? From a time when dinosaurs weren't just confined to zoos!

I've had one before, and it was about 3 years after I sold the car. I think that some vehicles are checked especially low mileage ones for history in an attempt to discover if the mileage has been fudged somewhere along the line. There are no official records in the first 3 years, so a high mileage vehicle could be sold via the auction and the mileage altered before the first MOT my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

since it would be the cost of a stamp, i would reply, as it could catch out dodgy garages/sellers

Unless of course you have something to admit Whistle

You're not bound to reply, but having received them myself in the past it does help regarding dodgy clocking.

Cheers, nothing to hide but I wondered if it was a simple "Phishing" letter! From a time when dinosaurs weren't just confined to zoos!

Sounds like the new owner is unhappy with the car for some reason and suspects the dealer of clocking it. That'd set alarm bells ringing in my mind about the car I px'd it against from that dealer but maybe that's just my untrusting mind at work! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

My old FL1 went back to LR with over 90k on the clock after 2 years.
Got a letter from trading standards (or the equivalent - it was over 10 years ago), I rang to query the validity of the letter, it appeared the new owner was questioning the 24k that it was now sporting.

I filled it in and heard no more, but did feel sorry for the poor chap, it was wrecked, rear diff, propshaft, viscous coupling,IRD unit, front drive shafts, all U/S. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
