Iread somewhere that around 56 mph is most cars best speed for good mpg.

Thats a bit old school now. It used to be the case when mpg was quoted at a steady 56mph and 75mph, manufactures would half the injection pulse at these exact spots to get a lower mpg figure with a fuel injected car. This made the engine not so smooth around these points, and tuning companies would explot this by removing it, making the engine feel better, and no worse off in fuel consumption since the steady 56 / 75 was a bit artificual. Now days mpg or l/100km is quoted using the urban / extra urban and cobined measure. It's better than the 56/75 measure but still a little artifical.

Basically the amount of fuel you use has so many factors, its very hard to generalise like that. Obviously the faster you go the higher your resistance generated by drag in the fluid called air, but you also need to factor the wind speed and direction into this.

Anyway you get my point.

Chris.
