MPG - its how you drive that counts!

Interesting feature on last nights Top Gear which they put the 'reasonably priced car' (whatever it is - some cheap and nasty car) against a BMW M3. The reasonably priced car had to go as fast as it could around the track whilst Clarkson had to stay right behind it in the BMW. The resonably priced car achieved 17mpg whilst the BMW managed 18mpg thus proving that a 4.4L V8 can be more economical than a 1.0L car provided it is driven sensibly.

I too have proven the theory. I drove down to Devon last weekend and took my time travelling between 65 and 70mph and achieved 35.6mpg. It took me 3 hours 40 minutes. Coming home it took only 3 hours 10 minutes as this time it was 70mph to 90moh (I mean 75mph Whistle ) and could only get 32.2mpg! Druve sensibily and the mgp mpg be very good!! Exact opposite for me, Mrs Freebo managed 34.0 in our TD4 Auto on an 800 mile round trip this weekend, I now have it back down to 28.2 on my, mostly A-Road work commute Big Cry

The best bit - that reasonably priced car was a Toyota Prius Hybrid.

I would love a Hybrid, because they have a massive 110v power supply that I could use to charge my radio controlled helicopters from all day, instead of taking a masive car battery to the flying field.

Chris.

We should all print this article http://www.thetorquereport.com/2007/03/toy...icien.html and display it in our front windows to ward off an attack of the greens.

Yeah bit too bling for me too. I also have a Tag. Bit old but perfect time and not a mark on it.

I was speaking to a guy the other day who works in hospitality. He said look at this. I see guests looking at it and saying ooh that's a Breitling Bentley and they think I bet he's loaded!

I looked down and he had 20 quid shoes on that were going grey with age and lack of polish, his shirt collars were frayed and his suit looked like Ricky martin had been livin La Vida Loca in it all night.

I don't really think they are fooled do you mate? Whistle

One of my mates got himself an Omega and it was "its 12 O'Clock Omega time" and Omega this and Omega that , typical jokey lad he is.

At my local his got asked the time, did the old fly the arm out and holding the watch out front giving it's "7pm Omega time" to get a reponse from a bloke next to him at the bar "7:05pm Rolex time" but his exgerated moves showed off an original Rolex which was covered in £20k of diamonds

Never did the "Omega time" after that and was a little quiet the rest of the night. Laughing

Myself I have Seiko Kinetic & Casio G-Shock, Mrs NP has Omega and Tag Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Back to topic ! Just a builder so Timex has to do !!
Just completed a round trip to Eastbourne (to take father in law to watch the tennis) using the M25, M23 and A roads, including a bit of driving / sight seeing whilst there and returned 40.4 mpg. I was pleased with this as I wasn't hanging about on the motorway. 2009 Grey HSE Auto

Iread somewhere that around 56 mph is most cars best speed for good mpg.

I must admit some days I sit for miles in a queue of cars behind a Micra driving octogenarian along A roads here in Aberdeenshire without being able to overtake, pulling my hair out and swearing like a chicken farmer who just got told his new car was going to be grey as they had run out of black ones, only to be pleased when I see the mpg.

I can average 40 odd mpg over a 60 mile run quite easily in this manner.....
