A Soldier’s Cemetery

by John William Streets (killed and missing in action on 1st July 1916 aged 31)

Behind that long and lonely trenched line
To which men come and go, where brave men die,
There is a yet unmarked and unknown shrine,
A broken plot, a soldier’s cemetery.

There lie the flower of youth, the men who scorn’d
To live (so died) when languished Liberty:
Across their graves flowerless and unadorned
Still scream the shells of each artillery.

When war shall cease this lonely unknown spot
Of many a pilgrimage will be the end,
And flowers will shine in this now barren plot
And fame upon it through the years descend:
But many a heart upon each simple cross
Will hang the grief, the memory of its loss. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

There was a brilliant line (referring to World War II) by Christopher Eccleston in Doctor Who when he said that the German War Machine rolled across Europe flattening all in its path until one damp little Island said no. No, not here. Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Only the TV screen as we watched BBC2 from 18.30 to 23.15 .Very moving programme from Mons.
Ditto Westminster Abbey apart from Eddie Butler talking over the violinist towards the end of the service.

WE WILL REMBER THEM.

I would rather see the money that is spent holding memorial events going to those injured instead. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Sorry but I didn't know anyone who fought or had any relation that did that I know of in the first world war. So maybe it is not such a personal issue for me so no candle burning or anything Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

Likewise, my grandad wasn't! he was home guard in WWII, his farther I'm not sure, I never met him, but my great gran never spoke about her husband to my then young knowledge

My mums, mum I don't recall any stories either, though her second husband was in the police and I recall him been photoed with the queen, but I believe his dad was military.

If I search my surname, 43 come up, my mums maiden name only the one appears

Even though, I'm not 100% sure, still like to show my respect, but have nothing towards those that don't, as long as they don't show disrespect Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

My Gran's brother Ernie went down on the Black Prince. Great Aunt's Husband joined Grenadier Guards and went to war with jet black hair. He returned home with a full head of white hair which is as I remember him. Never spoke about the war though.
We watched BBC2 and put one candle on. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
