Chickens get a rough life poor sods,i love how the " supermarkets" are having an investigation and getting tough when it's their demands for cheap chicken that causes these situations.

We get what we pay for. Everyone from producer to retailer is in it to make a profit so a cheap chicken will not have had a happy life and the process fro farm to shop will be as "streamlined and efficient" as possible. As there is no slack in the system nothing will get "wasted" and the production will not stop if at all possible, whatever the problem.

The chicken in KFCs, Nandos and curries and pies will always be the lowest cost but at least we can be selecive when buying whole chicken or joints at the supermarket. GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

not a pretty picture of my industry. all of that is after the birds leave my farm.

retail price pressures do force the industry to be as ' cost effective' as possible. food cant all be produced by happy jolly farmers and butchers and sold in twee wrapping in farm shops.

Millions of bird need to be slaughter each week to feed the UK population , such shock press reports are easy to produce and hard to defend against, and must be read with an open mind.

My premises are audited , sometimes re- audited by the supermarkets too. At work

I know wasn't having a go at you pal it's things like that Bernard Mathews scandal that sticks in the mind muppet casual workers playing baseball with live birds etc it extends to all the meat we consume in this country. Local inner city farm near me has recently set up a chicken scheme for the garden,it's been a huge success.

Similar reports come out in the US every month or so. It's bad enough that Ms. McScrote and I have taken to buying all of our meat and poultry from local farms via a great little co-op delivery service that comes to the door every other week.
And wow - what a difference in taste.

As with a lot of things we're very lucky with access to good fresh food down here in deepest Cornwall. Our local butcher is also a local farmer and we know more or less exactly where our meat comes from. We have a local fish delivery service from the boats in Newlyn (about half an hour's drive away) so there's precious little food mileage involved there too. We buy Cornish milk and cream and have many local ice creams, beers and ciders (cider and jams produced by the grandchild of Donald Healey of sports car fame, who used to have a garage just down the street from us).

It's a great retired life here in Perranporth. We're well blessed and appreciate it. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Having just returned from down there rjc1944, indeed you are blessed! I have dined on fresh Crab and Lobster nearly every day for the last week, and washed it down with copious amounts of Rattler and Proper Job Very Happy To say I was looking forward to returning home was of course definitely not the case! Foraging near Gaydon....

Makes me laugh when you get the likes of Hugh Fernley Whatsisname and other millionaire celebrity chefs tellig us we should buy free range, hand reared, cuddled to death chickens at 」20 a pop. People cant afford that. Look at it this way - youve got two chickens - one living the life of Rielly and the other up to his neck in chicken Censored and standing on other dead birds. Which one of them woulkd be pleading to be killed when Mr Farmer comes along with his axe? Exactly! Rolling Eyes Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
