Over the last few months the alarm on my LR2 has been randomly going off. About 2 weeks ago the car's interior lights started flickering and the GPS unit reset, so I figured the battery must be dying.

I've replaced the battery and haven't had the flickering issue since then. However the car alarm is still going off occasionally.

Does anyone know of some common causes for something like this? Installed a hitch, stock roof rack, mantec skid plates, General Grabbers AT2 255/60/R18, and a rear access ladder. Also made a hitch-mount for the winch. Looking to install a front hitch, rooft-top basket, and lift kit.

Bit of a wild guess but, there is a fuse F17 in the battery junction box that is common to the alarm, interior lighting and other things. It wouldn't be blown but maybe a poor connection around that area

I had a similar problem 6 months back. My Sat Nav and radio unit reset themselves a couple of times and the alarm would sound for no apparent reason at all hours. Didn't have the flickering lights, but occasionally the alarm would sometimes sound on popping the boot with the remote.
Took it to the dealer who asked me if the drivers door was definitely shut on those occasions, as it was showing up a fault with that door. They eventually got the O.K from LR to change the drivers door lock and I've not had those problems since!

Approx 4 months back the alarm on my car started going off randomly. I mentioned this prior to a service @ Premier Motors, Land Rover Abu Dhabi & they suggested the battery may be failing which was logical as at times when starting on a morning it sounded weak. However they did not replace the battery stating it was fine and everything appeared to be for a couple of months until the battery started going off randomly again and then it would not start so I changed the battery – all good. Well at least for a couple of months then the alarm started going off again at times and then one morning after starting I heard a loud squeeling / screetching noise which lasted for around 1 minute. Later in the day the battery was flat and it would not start. The next day it started again without jump leads (proves the replacement battery was a good one!) but it only drove for a few mins before going into limp mode and driving max 5kmph with all warning lights on dash, sat nav etc flashing and the key being stuck in ignition slot. I had the car recovered and taken to main dealer for repair.

I visited the workshop yesterday and was shown the car cylinder head off (?) to gain access to alternator – seemed excessive to me? The alternator has a small spigot on the end of the cylinder inside of which in some gearing mechanism and a small part of this was broken hence the squeeling / screetching noise that I had heard. They mentioned that Land Rover may be reluctant to cover this under the 250,000km warranty as the service was several thousand kms over due. I said we would await the decision before further comment.

I have just received a call from Land Rover who inform me that LR UK Warranty claim a new engine is required or the same problem will simply happen over again and again! I laughed but was assured the conversation was not a joke and we must await Landrover decision to see IF they will cover the associated costs otherwise the burden lays with me. My limited mechanical knowledge indicates that this cannot be the case. IN this part of the world western expats are seen as easy targets for extracting large sums of money in return for very little.

OK so it sounds like a lug on the cylinder head for the alternator mount has broken off !
Wow, sounds horrendous, if it were mine I would be finding someone to weld the lug onto the head and sell it.

Alloy welding can be done if the head is heated in an oven first, to keep the heat uniform. It will be a specialist service but there are specialists out there that can do that type of repair.

Are Landrover saying there is a design fault ? and that's why you need a new engine ?

Mine jsut started sounding at random times, usually within a couple of minutes after locking. COuld it be the battery is dying? it is also idleing a little rough, but thats for another topic. 2008 with 90,000km.

I'm hoping the battery replacement will solve the alarm issue,.. anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like the battery backup sounder (BBS) to me, if you do a search you'll find several postings on it.
Had the same thing a while back, it's also associated with the auto lights & wipers coming on & off at random.
It's an easy diy job to fit a replacement, it's located behind the battery area in the scuttle on the front bulkhead.
