Snow chains

Thanks Jimmy I all ready have a set of Konig T2 247 which were used on my Jeep cherokee these have all ready been fitted and appear to fit ok

Hi npinks. Above statement made me a little bit curious. You are saying cars without winter tyres were going nowhere. I immedeately thought; -no one in their sane mind would use summer tyres in the mountain in the winter.

Then I thought: Is npinks meaning tyres without chains? Does npinks mean winter tyres = tyres with chains?

So what is it npinks?

In Norway we have summer tyres & winter tyres (with or without dubs). In addition we have chains if conditions are absolutely horrible.

I have SUV winter tyres without dubs (Conti 4x4 IceContact). No need for chains.

Last time we discussed chains, I asked my salesman at Land Rover about chains. (whether to have 2 or 4 chains on). His first response was: What on earth do you need chains for?

A few days ago I tried my FL2 up & down a steep icy hill. I would never even concider trying with my previous car. I was curious whether or not I would slip & slide backward driving up.

Very convincingly me FL2 drove up the hill like it was summer. I was impressed. The glory to be shared between the tyres and FL2.

Then I drove down, putting my HDC on. I was curious (again) whether or not the car would slide away. But it didn't. It had a firm grip on the icy ground. Impressed again. Absolutely no need for chains. Just a set of good winter tyres.

And further to my salesmans response whether or not to have 2 or 4 chains on. He said:

You can have only 2 chains on if you are: 1) Driving slowly 2) Not driving far.

Otherwise you should have 4 chains on not to rouin the car. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Automatic, Caspian Blue, Alpaca, Moon roof, Exclusive pack.

I'm agree with viking...

I've been driving my fl2 on snow a lot of times now... (going every week-end in the mountain) and experience no problem at all . Mine has 17" wheel with winter tyres (bridgestone LM25 4X4).

It's just a pleasure to drive on snow,even with a lot of snow on the road. I would not think a situation where chains would be needed. Just get you some good winter tyres and it's should do the job...

Maybe the "sensors" are something to do with the tyre pressure monitoring system ??

My FL2 is not a high enough specification to have this

I think that chains that interfere with brake pipes etc are just simply not the right size - meaning that at the back side of the tyre (towards the engine) - the chains should only reach a few cm down towards the middle.

At the front side of the tyre it's a different story - whereby the chain fixing mechanisn can nearly cover the whole side.

Anyway - I'll send some pictures

PS - which type do you use ?

just a curiosity: did you mount the winter tyres on the original rims or did you buy new rims just for that?

my FL2 is not yet arrived, but I ordered the Maggi TRACK LT50 (they are spyder type) directly from my dealer, also because I hope he will take charge of that. I agree with Viking and agin that snow chains are unecessary with winter tyres, but I have to cope with local police regulations that in some parts of the Alps (italian, Austrian and French) they may oblige you to have them.

Hey Attox,

Same here - I just have the chains to comply with local driving laws in France & Italy when skiing etc.

I've fitted GoodYear Wrangler HP All Weather tyres and these stay on the whole year. They are not 100% summer or 100% winter tyres - but a compromise.

I expect these tyres on the FL2 should be absolutely fine when travelling to and around the ski resorts.

Anyway - I'm going soon so I'll keep everyone posted

On the original rims...I wanted to put it on smaller wheels 16", but didn't want to buy new one in 16".

I would be carefull with all weather tyres, can be dangerous on slippery slope.

Thanks agin, same thinking from myself, also because there are not 16" winter tyres in the size we need.
I have been also tempted to buy 4 new 17" rims but, excluding some third parties manufacturer because don't have the right size (17" x 7.5"), the original ones are too expensive. Hope mounting and dismounting is not too bad for the tyres.

Would be interesting to see you drive here on some real ice & snow with those kind of tyres.........

I know I know - but travelling in Denmark and to France / Italy on proper roads is nothing at all like the conditions you experience in Norway, Sweden, Finland etc.

If an excellent 4WD vehicle with these tyres has a problem - then basically most other drivers on those roads will be completely stuck !

Anyway - soon we'll see...........

Not if they are equipped with proper tyres!

I believe that "winter" tyres are mainly a Scandinavian phenomenun. When I lived in the UK - we never changed tyres in Winter, neither did we when driving to the French / Italien ski resorts. In fact, I only knew about "winter / summer" tyres when I moved to Denmark.

I suspect that most divers in Europe just use 1 set of tyres - unless living in a particulary snowy region.

Does anyone in the UK change to "winter" tyres - for home driving - or travelling abroad (eg to skiing) ?

I have always kept to the same tyres, though occasionally got new ones if the tread is low or nearly illeagal, I don't think in Leeds it would be cost effective to get the winter tyres.

If i take the car to the Alps, same tyres and snowchains. Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
