United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Narvik Black

I can't believe how well Freelanders are holding their price - especially higher spec ones. I bought my 3yr old SE with full leather back in September / October time from a dealer and I recently had another look and the same car, same yr is still going for the same price - if not more!!!

I gather that people who bought at the beginning of 2010 got an even better deal as the car was only just hitting 3yrs and the residuals still levelling out.

After the winter I was expecting prices to come down a bit for spring as everyone should be looking for two seater soft tops but I've been proved wrong... clearly the bad winter is still on peoples mind and keeping the price strong.

I've never bought new as the initial hit as you come out of the showroom is a killer, but the way things are looking at the moment, i might be prepared to take that hit - especially with LR 2yr 0% deal!!!! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

Spare wheel and heated screen are essential extras. Toyota lost me to Land Rover after new Rav 4 models came without spare and more importantly NOWHERE to put one. That coupled with their run flat fiasco on T180 was the end.
Run flats were sent to Belgium for repair in first year (you were loaned a service wheel) then dealers got the special machine (£20K) and charge a fortune for puncture repairs.

Not much use when you are 200-300 from home at weekends and on forrest roads. All FL2's (3) Gone

My 2p, you could but a year old HSE private plate it and then put new bumper and other stuff on to make it look like a new un.

Although I haven't even got my own Freelander yet, I have done nearly 250,000 miles in a series of 3 V70 D5's since 2003.

What I can say is that, much as I love the D5 engine, the turbo lag is noticeable, or VERY noticeable if it's a post 2006 183bhp V70! I look a new type TD4 2.2 diesel Freelander manual out for a 100 mile test drive and it exhibited none of the turbo lag that dogs the V70.

I have to agree, leather is absolutely essential and a sunroof is nice. I ordered a XS with leather and no sunroof and looking back, wish that I'd ordered a GS with leather and a sunroof instead! Oh yes, the heated screen too! Once you've got the essentials sorted out, the added frippery of the HSE seems like unnecessary clutter!

Tigger, fascinating remarks re the V70 and turbo lag - reassuring to know it wasn't just me then. Mine was one of the first 2006 MY 183 bhp examples. I had owned a 240 and then a 740 estate for about 15 years and felt the V70, although a very nice looking car, lacked the honesty and sheer capability and practicality of the earlier Volvos.

Your comments re your test drive have gone a long way to reassuring me over the superiority of the Freelander. I think the D5 lump should really be consigned to the scrap heap when you look at the competition. I am amazed it is still in production, but it may have something to do with the new owners not wanting to invest. Anyway, this is a bit off-topic even if it is of interest to us.

Found myself near Exeter yesterday so went to Matford Land Rover and managed to get a brief test drive in an SD4 HSE. Very smooth and relaxing drive. There was a hint of lag on take-off, but nothing like the V70. My problem is that for the last 4 year I have been driving a petrol turbo Forester which is very responsive. Any diesel powered car will be have different powery delivery characteristics which I will have to get used to if I want better mpg.

Can anyone who has an SD4 and previously ran a TD4 tell me if there is a real improvement in mpg with the 'new' engine.

Going back to my road test, one feature I had not been aware of in previous drives was the slightly 'nervous' steering for want of a better description. By this I mean that although it is wonderfully sharp and very light (which suits my shoulder injury), in the straight-ahead on motorways you seem to have to concentrate more to keep your line. I suppose the opposite experience came from my old XTrail which had such heavy self-centring you could drive with your hands off the wheel.
Has anyone else felt the steering is a bit odd, or is it just me?

I came up the ranks via an Xtrail, TD4e and then the SD4. The TD4e was a MY10 model so I can't go back earlier on MPG but I did get it to show an average of 42.5mpg, the SD4 has managed 40.5mpg max but I must admit to not being bothered really. I believe both these figures are a good improvement on earlier models.

The Xtrail was heavily weighted and camber in the roads use to give me arm ache, I now find after a bit of getting use to, the FL2 steering to be really well weighted though some may find it a little light and no, I don't find there's a tendency to wander. Maybe I did initially but not now.

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

My 2007 TD4 averaged about 34 - 35 mpg, my current 2011 TD4 is averaging 40 - 41 on similar driving conditions.
Both manuals.

England 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 Sport Auto Firenze Red

my first LR experience is with an SD4 and I find it very well planted on the motorway, overall I find it handles very well for a 4x4, no wandering around, not as sharp as a clio RS200 but very good.

real world I am getting between 35 and 37mpg mixed between single lane A roads (morning commute) and long motorway runs, I think that is pretty good for a LR and better than I expected SD4 Sport LE Firenze Red - no options or modifications yet, but it's early days.

E, thats exactly how I found the XTrail. After long journeys, where I was continually fighting the camber, I thought my right arm was coming out of its socket. My comments re the FL2 steering are really only made because I found it different to what I am used to and clearly not a major issue like the XTrail - in that case it was the reason I got rid after 18 months.

Your mpg figures look OK - better than max 25 mpg!

My wife's FL1 was the hardest car to drive on a m/way ever! The FL2 is very good IMHO, so not as your test drive suggests. 2010MY Freelander 2 HSE Auto
