how come you bought from the square group? and not apple direct?

They are a premium re-seller and fully authorised by Apple anyway. Full backing a support from their engineers who are apple experts. I also got an £80 student discount. Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Any seasoned mac users know if I need anti virus? Salesman said that the viruses and trojans etc aren't written for macs. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I've have been using a Mac for 20 years. At one point I started up and ran a design studio consisting of 15+ Macs all WITHOUT virus software.

I use to use Norton Anit Virus but found I had more problems with it than without. It's so long ago that I forget what the issues where now as it must be at least 14 years since I last used such software.

Just be conscious about SPAM emails coming through. As long as you don't open any attachments then you'll be fine.

Not saying that there aren't any viruses out there, I just haven't some across any myself.

Personaly my belief is that some of the virus's come from the Anti Virus software makers themselves Twisted Evil

Congrats on your purchase BTW Very Happy

Doc, you don't "need" anti-virus software because it's not a mojor problem with Macs. Depends if you visit any dodgy sites on it or download unofficial stuf. Then you may be vulnerable.

I recommend clam av which is free and unintrusive.. See earlier post.

Thanks. I have the anti virus installed just in case now. Aside from the style and quality of the computer itself, I love how the keyboard is back lit and the apple logo on the lid lights up when in use.

As for useage, it is extremely fast. I don't think this is just down to the dual core 2.3ghz i5 processor and 8gb ram either. The shutdown is instant and I have never known that on any windows computer. With all the windows computers I have ever used there is the saving settings and logging off before shut down. It also starts up really fast and once the password is entered there is no stupid delay while it loads all the bits and pieces.

Well pleased Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

as the saying goes... once you go Mac, there's no going back Smile

I've had my macbook pro for 2 and a half years now and it does look or feel a day older than new. I've upgraded to snow leopard and then Lion without any problems and i feel Lion runs faster than snow leopard Smile

Happy days Smile

Looking to buy whilst I wait for my high fever to move on and I can go back to work

I have found I am eligible to discount vouchers for PC World/Currys which give £7 off per £100 spent

Which makes them a fair bit cheaper buying the ipad2 or MacBook

Is there any down side to buying from them? If I have an issue does it go to pc world or can I send it direct to apple

Just bought a Apple TV to put me on till I decide, but think it will be ipad2 first then MacBook a little later

Thinking White 32gb wifi only and buy a 3g MiFi unit if I find I want portability That way I can surf on laptop also if needs be as O2 don't do tethering I believe Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

NP, I run exactly the same set up with my iPad2. MiFi with 32Gb Wifi model is definately the way forward. Make sure that you buy a smart cover too, they are essential to protect the screen.

Concerning PC World, yes I bought my first MacBook Pro from them and customer service is very good. You still have all the same warrantees as with Apple stores but you cannot take the Mac into an Apple store to have it replaced. they will send off to Apple.

iOS5 will be out in the Autumn too, so will airplay everything thru Apple TV then. 2012 DISCOVERY 4 GS AUTO ORKNEY GREY

I am thinking of selling my MacBook Air which I picked up in New York last month

It's the top of the line new model (of course!)

You would get it for around 25% of the new UK price

Am I breaking any rules putting it on here? I remember disco3 peeps selling phones etc? I will of course donate to Martin if the buyer comes via freel2 (as I have done before when selling items)

The simple answer to the original question is:

Apple products are so expensive because you have to buy their products and their OS AND how else would Steve Jobs be able to gather enough money to 'buy America' Rolling with laughter 2002 Honda VFR800
