Just when you needed it.

Freelander wouldn’t start yesterday morning, -4c but that shouldn’t make a difference, just cranking and throwing the switch out . Tried several no numerous times going through glow plug cycle . I ended up putting a jump starter pack thinking battery (not long had car ), but no. I then put the Ctex charger and left it till night , battery well up to charge tried again, no joy. Left it till 12pm and after 5/6 attempts with small firing ups but never quite getting there, finally caught ignition . Definitely not battery and nothing in diagnostics . Plug relay checked on diagnostic and comes on but may have to physically check them as I can’t think of anything else at this stage. Supposed to have been serviced as far as the sales garage told me.
Any clues welcome , this was real bad timing ....not chuffed , but moving on.😏

I took this image of two engine faults but according to dates they were last year.

Start with the basics:

Have you got a extra earth lead.

If fuel filter not recently done change.

Do a hard re-set.

If still a problem after those go to pub until spring.

May well be glow plugs but that is not a 2 minute solution.

You mention garage and sale ? If recent sale its their problem not yours. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Hi, had the same problem with mine the last two days. Never fails normally down to -2°C. but -5°C just too much for it.

Taken three 10s attempts today to start. Some new glow plugs required I think. Not too surprised at 11 years old.

I will be removing swirl flaps (if there's any left) in a few weeks so ideal time.

Did you try cancelling the two codes to see if they come back up? Without checking the details on the codes, I would wonder about the throttle body. If it is jammed shut you won’t get air in to allow it to fire up. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Electric throttle stuck in a position where doesn't allow the air to enter the engine?.... So you can't start it.

JGH99, indeed, new glow plugs required. The engine can start down to -5 deg. without glows, but no less than that.

I’m pretty sure those codes have been there for a while if you go by dates, I would have been happier if they were more recent, ...something to go on .
Been running car most of the afternoon and it’s fine, but tomorrow will tell all. Anyone know if a manual test I can do , like resistance values, perhaps Someone with Auto-data.

Alfapat, the point, though, is you need to clear the old codes or you won’t know if it is an ongoing problem, or now fixed, or just a temporary glitch in the ECU. As far as I am aware the code only shows once, the first time it happens, so unless you clear it and try again you really don’t know if the code is relevant. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

I've had the same problem at -5C. Two days running.

Engine turns over, and almost catches. But not quite.

Day 1 - at -5C ran battery down trying, so use jump cables from and was able to try a few more times before it burst into life
Day 2 - at -5C nearly ran battery down, it eventually started when the battery was nearing the end

It has been serviced recently, although dont think fuel filter was on the list.

However, does this sound also like glow plugs? Car is 9 years old with 180,000 miles on the clock '09 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto

At -5 you need to know for sure the fuel filter is A OK and no water sediment is in it, if not changed in last 2 years it needs doing, especially if doing high miles. A standard A service does not do much more than change the engine oil and oil filter.

If your battery is older than 5 years I would change that out if not always on a trickle charger.

Every chance your heater plugs are goosed at that mileage.

Comes down to time, money and inconvenience in the end but if you get past this cold spell you really need to think forward to next Winter. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
