At the time of writing there are 151 electric cars for sale on Autotrader under 5K and not all of them are Nissan Leaf`s!. Before anyone else says it I don`t think there was any that would tow 3.5 tons up the side of Everest after driving from John o` Groats on a single charge, but there was a decent range of cars to pick from including a GTM kit car converted by Bradford Uni to battery power!

Ah! tempted are we! The battery lease is I think mainly from Renault who lease the battery to you for a monthly fee based on your estimated mileage which was introduced to lower the purchase price to match as close as possible the cost of a diesel model and remove the worry of being stuck with the replacement cost of a battery. Renault are no longer offering the lease on (at least) the new Zoe as residuals on 2nd hand models are high and batteries are typically still in good condition after years of use.

I would always be wary of a BMW in white without options such as leather, as a risk it could be an ex police car. The main suspect are the 330d touring which are ex-traffic vehicles. If you read adverts, many have needed new engines. Apparently someone to do with these cars sitting idling at roadside for long periods then driven hard. There’s lots of articles on internet and you tube. Caveat emptor.

Thanks for the tip. It was not necessarily that car just more the price bracket. Thought of volvo or bmw as they are rear wheel drive for towing the caravan. Still fingers crossed when the mechanic comes to look at the freelander the problem is small and cheap to repair.

It may be rated to tow1600kg but how far on a charge and there is a considerable difference between rated to tow and designed to tow, designed to tow tends to be limited to the larger 4x4's such as the Toyota Amazon, Nissan Patrol, pickups and every Land Rover ever built. I have considerably large doubts the the new breed of super SUV's like Bentley, Rolls Royce and Aston Martin are designed to tow or the customers that buy them want to, the Audi E-tron 4x4 has a range of 90 miles towing a 1600kg caravan my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
