United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Loire Blue

Just had an email from WBAC about my FL2(which I traded in last week). A week ago it was coming in at £8k and this week £7,750 so prices definitely dropping

Incidentally JLR are doing a security recall. Sorry about the layout but I lifted it off a DS forum

Thefts prompt Jaguar Land Rover to retro fit thousands of cars
with new security
Range Rovers were among most-stolen cars in Britain last
year
By Howard Mustoe

2 November 2023 • 7:37pm
Jaguar Land Rover is racing to patch holes in the security of
thousands of its luxury Range Rover vehicles in an effort to
halt the crime wave stalking the cars.
The company is retrofitting a variety of Land Rover and
Jaguar models made between 2018 to 2022 with security fixes
after thefts and insurance premiums skyrocketed.
Owners will be contacted and some may need to visit dealers
for updates.

Range Rovers were among the most-stolen cars in the UK last
year because of their high resale value and keyless
technology that criminals exploit.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) chief executive Adrian Mardell said:
“The theft record was much worse in 2022 than it is today.
“Engineers have been working on a significant number of
interventions to counteract, avoid and get ahead of the ways
that vehicles can actually be taken.”
Thieves have been able to buy car hacking technology online
that allowed them to fool cars into unlocking and starting
without needing a key.

Devices claiming to be able to mimic the radio frequencies
used to control keyless cars have been blamed for an uptick in
theft for many car models.
Making the security codes used to control the cars harder to
crack is understood to have been central in preventing thefts.
Security has already been tightened for Range Rovers made
since January last year, chief executive Adrian Mardell said,
and the theft rate among those cars has been “incredibly low”.
JLR has been reluctant to describe the details of its security
updates given their sensitive nature.
Car makers have been tightening up their software in order to
close the loopholes. Vehicles receive regular updates
remotely over wireless internet as a matter of course.
JLR has worked with insurance industry bodies to help show
that the problem is being fixed after premiums for owners
rose to thousands of pounds, particularly in urban areas like
London.

Telegraph analysis conducted last month found that just two
insurers were willing to cover a Range Rover Velar RDynamic in London.
Quotes for the cheapest annual premium – based on a 35-
year-old woman living in London with six years’ driving
experience and no claims – amounted to £22,515 on average.
In the year to March, one in every hundred Land Rovers on
the road was stolen and Range Rovers accounted for six of the
top 10 most-stolen car models overall. The Range Rover Velar
R`Dynamic was the most popular target.
Mr Mardell said: “We’re very confident that our vehicles
being purchased today are in a much more protected state
than they would have been two to three years ago.”
Security issues “will continue to get the focus that they’ve
had over the last 12 to 18 months going forward until we see
this trend actually being eradicated from society,” he said.
A JLR spokesman said: “JLR vehicles from 2022 onwards –
Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Defender, Jaguar F`Pace –
are equipped with the latest security features and are proving
very resilient to theft.
“We are continuing to roll out a programme to enhance the
security of models from 2018 onwards and already tens of
thousands of eligible vehicles have received software updates
via their retailer, to provide the latest vehicle security.
“We will be contacting more clients directly about this issue
in the near future.”
Mr Mardell was promoted to chief executive at JLR earlier
this year.
The company is Britain’s biggest domestic car brand and the
second-biggest carmaker in the UK after Nissan.
JLR is planning a raft of new battery-powered vehicles and its
Indian owner Tata Motors has chosen the UK to host a plant
to make battery packs for the cars.

Lucky that the FL2 is prior 2018 and doesn't have keyless. Jules

I decided not to download the LR app on my phone that comes with my DS and just use the keys provided. We keep all car keys in a biscuit tin/Faraday cage in a kitchen cupboard. The more you have this stuff the more vulnerabilities you introduce and anyway why do I need to be able to start it up etc when I am not even in it? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Well exactly. Unnecessary and vulnerable.

When we go away I always remove several relays from the engine bay fuse box - takes less than a min for some peace of mind. Jules

My 1960s thief proofing was to extend the distributor earth (the flexible black wire that provides earth internally from points to the coil) to a switch under the dashboard.

Now for something serious (and alarming).
I have just had my insurance renewal - Saga Plus Fully Comp -
Last Year - £876, Next Year - £1319 - per annum - fixed price for 3 years.
I have checked on line for other quotes, but a good policy costs around that figure.
I am an only driver (only vehicle) and am only 81yrs old.
It looks like I will take the quote as it is a good policy covering everything. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Personally I have always found the quotes from Saga to be very expensive and I am 75. They send me quotes for my car every year and they are usually come in at least double what I get anywhere else. This goes for house and travel insurance too. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

,I spent £1300 plus tracker subscription on managing the risk of theft for my new motor £900 went on a Ghost 2 immobiliser , and a Scorpion s5 tracking system , which has a Bluetooth driver recognition tag . I’m very impressed with Scorpion , three or 4 times
I’ve forgotten to take the tag ( I wear it round my neck on a length of para cord , it wound negate the whole thing if it was on the key ring ) . Within minutes of me moving I got a call asking if a theft event is happening , and there is a process to follow to override the event . Easy people to deal with , good product , and a good app to put the car in service , valet , or transport modes ( tow or ferry for example ) . The other £400 went on GAP insurance as you can’t stop a theft if they are determined enough .

With respect to faraday pouches and such , I’ve found the pouches break down over time and should be considered a consumable I go through a couple a year . If you’re using a home device like a tin , the easy test is to pop your mobile in the tin and then get someone to ring it . If it rings your keys aren’t safe ! Not all faraday pouches will stop Bluetooth by the way .

As a final point newer vehicles often have the ability to put the key to sleep to protect from relay theft . Unfortunately a lot of the dealers don’t know that , I only learned about the HiLux on the Toyota forum 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned !

A retired police officer told me that the issue with trackers is not that you can track the vehicle but whether you can get the police to follow it up as they will always claim that they have more important calls for their resources elsewhere especially if it's gone into another county or police force area.

Incidentally this might be of interest if you want to know how insurance companies rate various postcodes.

True , 100% , but the insurers wouldn’t touch my truck without a tracker . They weren’t in the slightest but interested in the Ghost . The other interesting thing is that at the moment I can track the vehicle anywhere on my phone . If you confirm a theft the tracker company disable that permission . Probably to prevent tears before bedtime if you attempt self recovery from a gang of gangsters who wouldn’t think twice about burying you !

I do know several people who just buy a GAP policy , they say if it goes they don’t want it back . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Back in the late 1980's , part of the rigmarole of buying a new / replacement vehicle was ringing around the insurance companies to see if I could afford to insure my prospective purchase. Car theft for "joyriding" was big news. As a freighter in West Yorkshire at that time, we would attend numerous burnouts each week, when the stolen cars were dumped after a night of "fun".
Seems we have come full circle, but for slightly different reasons, although theft still seems to be the predominant factor.

I now live in central france. I am 57 & my wife 59. I insure my 2010 Freelander 2.2 td4 hse, my wife's 2010 Jaguar x type estate 2.2, and my 2000 Jaguar XKR 4.0 supercharged soft top for less than €900 a year combined. All the cars are insured for any driver over 21, with the exception if the XKR. I can drive the cars in virtually any country where there is currently not a war in progress. All the policies include breakdown cover. Admittedly the cover is only equivalent to the UK third party fire & theft + glass. The cars have limited Kim's each year of 12k, 12k & 6k respectively, although the XKR rolls over, so I have over 25k km in the bag.
My neighbour recently complained of having to pay €60 extra to include her 18 year old daughter learner driver on her policy.
Are some of the insurance premiums in the UK simply another example of rip off Britain?
My Mum (83) lives in the UK and has a 2021 VW golf 1.5. Her premium has increased by nearly 50% to just under £1000, fully comp, limited mileage, and no breakdown cover. Make you wonder .......

I would think all those advertisements for find some one to blame and have a claim on tv might have a lot to do with it.

Fairly sure that the "no win no fee" system is illegal in France and other parts of Europe. So ambulance chasing doesn't happen.
If you think that you have a valid claim you pay the solicitor up front, and if you win you may or may not get back the legal costs. Kind of focuses the mind / wallet.

So no inflated storage costs - because you pay up front, no inflated hire car costs, Doctors who get paid to say that you once had a soft tissue injury?

It's so corrupt in the UK that you no longer deal with your insurer, they pass your details to a "claims management company" and get paid by them for the business. So you pay for insurance, get a claim, and they get paid again by the claims management company Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Not all insurers use a claims management company. I had a claim with Hastings this year and they dealt with the whole thing, fairly well too although I did have to ring up and chase them a couple of times.
