I had a similar experience when my wife decided to stop driving and I removed her from the car insurance.

The reason for the increase in cost given was, that as I was the only driver, I might be more tempted to drive long distances, thus not sharing the driving with my wife.

I did point out that my wife had sold her car several years ago and has not driven anything since, but I got a 'Rules is Rules' and ' the Computer Says' answer.

I do however wonder if I promised never to crash into a EV would help? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Hello, just passing and saw this thread. For what it’s worth there’s an 80 yr old couple recently posted on Money Saving Expert whose renewal on their RR Sport has gone up from £660 to £7100. Someone else has added that they’re 42, clean licence, 3000 miles a year in a Velar, premium last year £660 and cannot get it less than £16000 😳 on the comparison sites. Yes, you did read that correct, £16000!.

By the way has my old Freebie GK63YWW surfaced anywhere on here? P/ex in April and seems to have subsequently been MOT’d in Morpeth so presumably living up north somewhere, far away from Khans greedy little mitts

so Speaking to my great nephew, aged 22 years runs a Lexus 430,
after a couple of months paying a rather high insurance rate, he brought an old rust bucket
of a small renault as his daily drive put it on the same policy... insurance went down by nearly £200! Rolling Eyes DAVE.

This month's What Car Magazine has a 3 car comparison test and the Discovery Sport is far less to buy on PCP of the 3 as it retains about two-thirds it's value over 3 years. I think the average depreciation is about half every 3 years.

In fact all LR vehicles have a superior percentage retention of value, despite the reported reliability problems.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the retained value of my present FL2 Metro (9 years old), still showing at about £11k+.
I just hope that I don't get a nasty surprise when I come to part exchange it sometime in the future. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I think you will be lucky to get £11k+ . My 14 plate XS SD4 auto with 75k miles and FSH was only showing £8k on WBAC and Autotrader valued it similarly. I paid £18k for it in 2017 so £10k depreciation over 6 years isn't too bad really. However the 3 yr old DS that replaced it was priced at £33k so used car prices have gone up a lot in the meantime. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Dorset,
You are right, I have just rechecked.

WBAC has dropped from £12.6k in Sep 2023 to £ £9.5k now.
Autotrader is now showing £10.5 part exchange, £12.6K private sale.
CarWow Dealer is initially offering £9.5k.

As you say, the proof is in the pudding - when I actually sell! FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I think a big part of falling used car prices is due to the world catching up after Covid, new cars now have a much faster delivery date once you order, it’s simply supply & demand.

Yes my son ordered a new Porsche 911 in June 2022 and he takes delivery next week. It was only in the last couple of months that they were able to give him a build date. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I think that there is a general tightening up of money going on. Looking on rightmove there is an awful lot more with reduced marked up besides the listing. People who buy older cars on a budget generally want cheaper road tax as well

This from LV to justify a £200 increase on an old Corsa used as a second car

Why is the cost of insurance rising?
It’s no secret that insurers are dealing with an increase in claims and growing costs. So, let’s look at some of the reasons behind these challenges and explain what we’re doing about it.

Challenges faced by the car insurance industry:
Cost of vehicle repairs – up 46% since last year. Reflecting rising costs, energy inflation and more expensive repairs. (Source: Data from ABI).
Vehicle theft – up 20.8% last year compared to the previous year, leading to increased claims. (Source: Data from ONS).
Labour costs for repairs – up 50% since 2019, due to inflation, shortage of skilled workers and the energy crisis. (Source: Data from Auto Body Professionals).

When money gets tight people will buy more used parts to keep their cars on the road. This leads to lowly run of the mill older cars being stolen just for spares. I remember a few years ago a gang in Bedfordshire stealing Vauxhall Astra inbig numbers to strip for spares, in turn making insurance cost more
