The cause was found to be the transmission main bearing had failed for no apparent reason. This in turn had knocked out the torque converter and FNS driveshaft.
Even the indie said he’d not heard of a main bearing failing before.
Glad it’s fixed now though.

Hi Dellboy,, I have the same fault,, When driving up a slight hill with a steady throttle and between 30-50mph.. feels like driving over a corrugated road,, but stops immediately when lift off the throttle...

Ok you say that in the end it was the 'main transmission bearing' whats that? location? how to test it? Thanks.....

I’m sorry but I can’t answer that as I’m not mechanically minded.
I can only repeat what my indie told me which is that they detected play at both ends of the FNS driveshaft.
The inboard end goes into the main bearing where it joins the transmission. The play was worse there.
I’ve just got it back with another LR exchange gearbox but it has dented my confidence in the car a lot. Hopefully that will change but at the moment I don’t feel I can rely on it. Derek Hill

Ah, that was a different issue with the LR recon exchange gearbox. Nothing to do with the original posted fault. Derek Hill
