OBD port security

Hi all,

I've been told that FL's can be broken into and a new key programmed via the OBD port. Is this still the case with the later FL2's? if so has anyone fitted an OBD port lock?

thanks

Given that the high speed CAN bus can be picked up as two wires all over the car, I don't think a lock on the OBD2 connection will slow someone down if they've decided to take your car.

I think it's the amount of time a thief is prepared to stay in car, especially if an alarm is going off. if they can't access the OBD port quickly and recode a key then they'll abort. I doubt they bother trying to connect via any other cables as it would probably take too long. Another post that I've just found covers it...

It seems recoding via the OBD port is possible using Chinese eBay stuff so probably worth looking at a lock of some kind or as someone else suggested move the OBD port somewhere else, a thief won't waste too much time looking for it.

I may be wrong, but to program another key, you'll need an existing, already programmed key, in order to start the "add new key" procedure.

The later part is the issue though. It is relatively straight forward to bypass the central locking, and open the doors without the alarm going off. Then you have all the time in the world.

Fortunately the immobiliser is harder to defeat.

There are plenty of places where you can access the HS CAN bus with viper clamps, probably quicker than plugging in to the OBD2 port (well if you always try to plug in upside down first, like me Whistle )

Moving the OBD2 port might slow them a little, but if someone has decided they are taking your car, they probably will.

IIRC the OBD port on a Freelander, although having a live 12V supply when the engine switched off, disconnects the connection to the rest of the car electronics. So unless you have a key to switch on the ignition, you can't do anything useful from the OBD port. Some other vehicles aren't like this, so it is possible to break into the car, connect a laptop through the OBD port and using some software, programme a new key... and off you go. Hence the production of OBD locks to try and prevent access. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

Leaving the ELM327 plugged in.

Hi everyone
Slightly off topic, but I would like to know if plugging in the ELM327, on a permanent basis, would drain/flatten the battery?
I drive my car on a daily basis. I've read posts in other forums speaking of dead batteries but I've not seen anyone in Freel2.com share the same experience. Thank you, Darren
