Turbo Question

A weird thing has happened today. The Turbo whistle has become quite audiable all of a sudden.

Still drives and puls perfectly, no smoke and runs fine, but I can hear the turbo a lot more now than before.

Any idea's. I have checked all the pipe work and all seems to be OK? Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

split interlcooler pipe I suggest, look closely though as the boosted air leaking will be causing the Whistle
look for a Failed rubber hose near any jubilee clip, if it is Duck tape will sort it till you can replace or at worse packing tape

It is still holding boost, so I doubt a boost hose is at fault. If there was a boost leak it would feel flat, mpg will drop off and she would over fuel.

I'll check but I'd be surprised if it is this. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Mine makes a right good weeeerrrrr sound, like above pulls well dose not overly smoke, but get a weeeeerrrr sound, it use to give a whistle type sound when you revved it, but now hardly hear the whistle and just get a weeerrr Laughing

Hoses look ok, but I suspect it is a failed hose so will changed next year to some blue pipes Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

No smoke at all, it has a DPF so you wouldn't see any smoke from overfuelling anyway. I'll get it checked out.

You could be right right in what you are saying, but it doesn't drive like there is a loss of boost pressure, but it didn't sound like this before.

Update, I have been to my local LR dealer this morning. An initial look doesn't show up any leaking hoses, but they identified that the turbo appears louder than normal. I also switched over to the other trip computer which has shown an average for the past 3 months, and mpg has dropped to a round 19mpg.

So she is going in on the 22nd Jan for a full investigation. It may not have a fault, but I'd rather have her checked out properly. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Got the car back today, and it looks like it is going to have a new Turbo fitted. All boost pipes and Intercooler are fine, but the dealer suspects that the turbo has a mechanical fault which is causing under boosting and the loud whistle.

So going back in on the 31st to have it done. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Praise the Lord for warranty:)
How many miles has yours covered now?
A friends RRS has recently had new turbo after repeated issues with loss of power etc on his vehicle.
Whole body off on his car though.

Only one, if the body's off might as well replace them both.

Mines on 22,000 miles. I haven't really felt any under boosting, but it sure whistles, sounds like a hair drier!

Not too concerned though as turbo replacements are not common. Like anything, you can make 1000 of one component and have a couple at fault. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Just had my turbo replaced, thankfully under warranty. It was leaking exhaust gases through the body of the turbo which then were being taken into the cabin: not a pleasant experience! Don't know the technical details of the failure but the above is what I was told by dealer. So, some do fail, and I guess in some different ways with different symptoms. 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

I collected the car today, after it was at the dealers all week.

A new Turbo has been fitted and the whistle has gone altogher. Not only that, the car is so much smoother in it's power delivery and the mpg already is creeping way above anything it has done before. Especially since the whistling became so loud.

So I wonder if the Turbo has ever been right.

One Thing I refuse to do though, is slate the car because it has had a Turbo at 22000 miles. It can happen. It doesnt make the Freelander 2 a bad car, far from it.

My Audi is now on it's second Turbo, second dual mass flywheel, 3 EGR valve, second Radiator, second water pump, second gearbox secector shaft.

Thats what you call a bad car! Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
