We have the Nikon Coolpix Bridge camera and have to say for what we use it for (holidays.. etc) it is fantastic.

Job done. Probably find it cheaper if you shop around but this camera gets really good reviews and the lens will cover all you'll ever need to photograph.

You'll get bored of a bridge camera and they're not that much cheaper. The physical size of the sensor will be bigger in the SLR as well so should in theory give you better quality, not that you are likely to notice on anything up to A4 size prints.

Don't skimp on memory cards either, buy SanDisk, Amazon and Picstop generally very good on price for these. Buy the Extreme's as they are water and dust proof.
