What is this ambient light for? Does it stay on all the time the headlights are on? If so, than I don't get the idea of having additional source of light inside the cabin, while driving at night.

its a very faint light, just enough to help you see the interior of the car. with no chance of dazzling you at all. its a nice gimmick really At work

I had those ambient orange l.e.d's on my last beamer. Had it for about two of the three years before I even noticed them Shocked
Extremely directional "downward fill light only" and only noticeable as a very dim glow when you put your hand in the region of the gear lever. If you look at the roof lining you will not notice anything as they are recessed, so you have to twist your head over the gear lever console and look straight up before you can see them. There are probably a few on here who have them fitted to BMW's and Merc's but like me, haven't noticed them.

my A3 had them also illuminated interior door handles the latter so dim you couldn't see them until you actually pulled the handle.

they are a nice touch, cheap too

tractors have the downlights too, its cheaper and easier than individually illuminating the switch gear At work

If I don't have the sunroof, is there a possibility to power those ambient orange led lights?
