Update

An Update

Thanks for all those who replied.

Spoke to the dealer yesterday and they started off saying they would need to drill off the current locking wheel nuts and replace them with a new set. Only after asking if they had a master set of keys did we get to a situation where they admitted they did and so arranged to pop the car in to see which one fitted.

After about a minute of trial and error they found the correct one!! Parts department were very good and have a new locking wheel nut key on order for me!

Thanks again for all the advice from you guys - saved me a lot of hassle!

Has anyone recorded the code on their key/ adaptor? All I have on mine is "Mc" followed by four letters - looked like the name of the manufacturer to me. The FL1 adaptor has a clear number stamped on it. 1982 RR Classic-converted to 200TDi-gone
1992 RR VogueSE- converted to autogas-gone
2000 FL1 3dr (wife's)
1996 Disco 1 300 Tdi(gone)

When the dealer found the correct key for mine it had a 3 digit code on the key itself. I didn't have a close look at the key so don't know if there was any other writing on it - but the 3 digit code is what is important.

Just had a look for my Wheel Nut Key. It has no visible number on it, just
marked McGARD. In the same bag is a Key Code Card with an 8 digit number
and date. Have now made a note of number and removed Card from vehicle
as suggested on the instruction sheet.
I notice it says not to use an impact wrench on it, do mechanics not use them
or does their use account for the missing, now damaged, Keys!!

Mine doesn't have any markings onthe than the McGard name stamped on it.

The paper leaflet does however have an 8 digit number - now safely placed in the manual in the house.

I guess the key number isn't on the "key" for security - the dealers master set must be unique in having the codes so as to know which one to sell us. 2002 Honda VFR800

McGARD is all that is on mine and I don't have any paperwork with a number on. Hope I don't lose it. 1982 RR Classic-converted to 200TDi-gone

Obtaining a replacement locking wheel nut key

I had the misfortune of getting a puncture on my 2011 FL2 on Tuesday night (which wrote off a Wrangler with only 8000 miles on it Evil or Very Mad ) and to make matters worse, I damaged the McGard locking wheel nut key when tightening up.

After speaking to my local dealer and working out that I had to get the 8 digit code and Julian Date to order a replacement (which I had in my car documents folder), I decided to look up the manufacturer's website. I found that you could (i) register your key details for future problems, and (ii) order new keys from them directly.

So I entered my details and placed an order, and just to be sure that my order had been received, I gave their Europe call centre a call. I spoke to a very efficient German call centre (a lady called Miriam) who confirmed my order and arranged for immediate dispatch.

I was very pleased to find out that firstly, they could arrange next day delivery (from Germany to where I was in Ireland) by DHL for EUR 19, and secondly,they would provide the replacement at no charge under warranty, as long as I promised to return the damaged key. I ordered at around 2pm on Wednesday and it arrived today (Thursday) at midday. Overall, a great service which is far better than having to go through a dealer, who would no doubt take a lot longer and a nice mark up...

Normally, one replacement key costs EUR 18 (or two for EUR 30). Worth getting hold of....!

Locking Wheel nuts

Just thought I'd add what happened with my F2.
I decided to remove the front wheel to check my brake pads ( I've never removed the wheels before), however the locking wheel nut key just refused to grip into the nut, on closer inspection the key profile was very beat up and would not undo any of the locking nuts.
I went to Hunters my local LR dealer and the Parts dept. said I could order a new key for £34.00 (ordered) or a complete new set of locking nuts and key for £44.00.
I got the complete set, and with their master key Hunters removed the old nuts and tourqued up my new ones at no charge.

I have owned my FL2 for 18 months and during that time towed a caravan through France not knowing that some s**t had messed up the locking key, please check yours fits and grips ok or a simple puncture could become a very costly nightmare.

I doubt whether there are more than about half a dozen different patterns - the aforementioned plastic bag that mine came in has a coloured shape on it e.g 'red square',

I watched the mechanic do the job and he had a box with about 16 to 20 different keys, he also warned me to ignore the black square on my bag and ensure that the card with the code number was kept safe as the number was required for replacement lock key.

The Freelander 1 famously had a very small number of patterns - your average thief could buy a full set of keys to nick your spare wheel with for less than the value of the wheel. I would hope that the FR2 has a bit more security.
