Just rebuilt engine...

They break at about 240k... I know this first hand... Twice...

There is a fairly easy bit of maintenance/work that can prevent the failure and probs make them good for the same again...

Hi, what did the rebuild cost, did it need a rebore and crank regrind ?

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Loire Blue

A couple of weeks ago I noticed an old W reg (1981?) VW camper van parked in the drive of a second home near me (there are lots around here but that's another gripe) it looked pretty dirty and almost abandoned so I noted the number and put it into the government website and sure enough it wasn't taxed. A few days later I noticed that it had gone and I assumed that it had been scrapped. But then it appeared again and my thoughts were that it was being driven without tax or insurance etc. So I got on the govt website again and lo and behold it had just had an MOT at nearly 290k miles and passed with only a couple of advisories about some surface rust underneath. Going back a few years the history showed few mechanical issues.

They don't make 'em like they used to. Very Happy 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I am sure that many of us drive Series Land Rovers.
They are only considered to be run in once they have done intergalactic mileage!

Nobody ever takes any notice what the odometer says at any rate Laughing

I have a 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 S and it's now clocked just over 220,000 kms! I've not had any major issues with the car and have mostly had it dealer serviced here in Brunei Smile

Mine's coming up to 10 years old in September and clicked over 302,000 kilometres this week. That's 187,654 miles.

205k miles on my 2009 HSE. No issues other than the usual consumables.

Of course just jinxed it now.

I do 35k a year - FL2 not the obvious choice but I love it.

United States 2008 Freelander 2 i6 SE Auto Tambora Flame

114,000 miles

3.2 I-6 automatic

Troubles in descending order

114,000 miles - replaced Thermostat and a couple hoses (Old Thermostat failed 5 minutes after removal)

100,000 miles - starter motor failed

70,000 miles - replaced the drivers door seal (it wore out where I step on it)

60,000 miles - replaced oil housing drain valve

50,000 miles - Power steering filter screen in reservoir clogged up

50,000 miles - Rear diff whine, replaced gear oil, added magnet and its still happy

under 50,000 miles - all warranty work: multiple software upgrades, battery replaced, recall for sunroof support, repaired sunroof due to poor closing (it would auto reverse instead of closing), replace trim panels due to seatbelt wear, replaced air bag cover, replaced faded vents for AC.

Items not included are expected maintenance / consumable items - filters, engine oil, gear oil, transmission fluid, Haldex fluid, spark plugs, Engine coolant, Serpentine belt and tensioner, PCV valve, tires, brakes (disc and rotors), battery, gasoline

I am expecting even less wear and tear over the next 10 year.

Time will tell

Take care

Paul

Somehow offtopic, but did you know that the diff cover has already internally a magnet of its own? See below...

Alex,

I am not 100% sure but I believe the two items that I see in the picture are

1. The bolt for the fill plug (no magnet) - this is where I swapped out the bolt for one with a magnet

2. The bracket to collect and funnel the gear oil for the side bearing (using splash lubrication from the ring gear) and I don't see a magnet here. Is this part magnetized on your differential?

Can you point at what part is magnetized?

Thanks

Paul

Some time ago, I've assisted to a diff rebuilt and I was surprised to see that the curved part attracted a washer....
So it must be magnetized. Or the washer was really dirty and stuck to the bracket??? I didn't checked for that and you may be right.... Oh boy... Embarassed
