Blue smoke when starting from cold

Noticed cloud of blue smoke when starting from cold. Only noticed recently, ie cold weather. Delay in starting this morning (very cold) . Just had 45k mile service. Clears almost immediately and doesn't repeat when re-starting engine from warm.

Delay is heater plug opperation, first time this occured with me was March in Braemar when display showed "heater plug opperation" then after a few seconds starter motor cut in. Display then showed -16c.
Blue smoke: make sure engine oil level is not too high.

Blue smoke = burned oil
Black smoke = excess fuel
White smoke = unburned diesel All FL2's (3) Gone

How much is a cloud mudflap? If it's just a slight puff and you just see a bit of a haze in the mirrors it'll be fine, diesels can do it when cold...diesel is a form of oil. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Its a big cloud of light blue smoke on firing up, then clears immediately. Doesn't happen again during the day even when engine cold. Just noticed in the mornings when engine cooled overnight. Seems to be worse in very cold weather. Beginning to fear valve seals. How do I diagnose this fault? (plus anyone got an idea how much valve stems and seal replacement this will cost?)
Just been in for service - can they pick this sort of thing up on a diagnostics machine? .

Happens on mine these last few cold days and mine has only just done 1k miles so doubt oil seals.

I had RRS before this and with no press start, you had to wait till 'plug light' gone out. If you didn't wait long enough, you would get the smoke.

I have just put it down to plug not really hot enough!

Think I just 'proved' my point?

Went out to start car but turned on ignition first. Left it for a few seconds to warm glow plugs and then started car.

No delay between pressing start and cranking and no smoke!

You're right. Landrover specialist says the same. I wasn't waiting for the warning lights to go out. Tried again this morning and used correct procedure. Started fine with only a minor amount of smoke. Apparently, a small amount is normal for diesels in cold conditions. Phew! thats a relief.

But where are the instructions? The book just seems to say get in and press the button...

SWMBO managed to flatten the battery on her FL2 this morning trying to start it. It had not been run all weekend and my diesel Passat showed -6 and was a pig to start as well.

I charged the FL2 battery for a couple of hours and even then it was a pig to start (ambient temperature up to -1 by then). You should have seen the cloud of smoke out of the back!

So what is the correct procedure for very cold starts? I thought that the FL2 was automatic glow plugs that ran when you unlocked the car so that once you went to start it, it should just fire straight up? (In the Passat I turn the ignition on and off a few times first to warm it through).

I did notice quite a few times that the engine management clearly thought that the engine had fired and stopped spinning the starter when in fact the engine hadn't caught and it stopped immediately - I'd much prefer a key that you can keep turned until the engine really is running!

You should get a few seconds (3 or 4) delay from pressing "Start" to the engine to start cranking, mine displays a message also something like "Engine will start after glow plugs heat up" or something like that.

Place keyfob in dock, DON'T depress the clutch pedal (brake pedal if auto), just press the starter switch and wait for the car to go through it's system check and more importantly WAIT for the coil light to go out, then depress the clutch/brake pedal and push the start button.

We do that procedure everytime on XYL's (and my old) FL2 and have never had any problems starting either regardless of temperature Thumbs Up ______________________

Haha!

Ours has always been fine just pressing the button, sometimes it takes a while to crank but always fires and is straight there. Cold can wreak havoc on engines in different ways.

You should see the smoke when starting a 12 litre straight 6 in -10 degrees! Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

No messages like that anywhere on our 07 plate. Maybe it's trying to tell us that the glow plugs are all dead and there's no point in waiting... Sad

Must admit that I never recieved the message till this winter, all the previous winters just had the short delay prior to cranking, I had read on here about the message and a software update so on the last visit to the dealer I asked them to look at the cold start, they did and now it gives the message. Thumbs Up
