The answer

Electric motor burnt out. Mk 7 fiesta wiper motor at £17 inc postage exchanged the motor onto the freelander housing hey presto it works. One point of note, absolutely no rust in the fiesta housing. Land rover take note!!

I believe there is a later seal available for this.

I tried this swapping a Fiesta wiper motor in Sept 2014 - different mounting chassis and different brush set-up inside the motor and back of big yellow gearwheel. Unable to swap the motor either as the Fiesta one was crimped onto the chassis (Freelander 2 one screwed on).
In the end I cleaned up the guts of the Freelander 2 original and gave it a good wiggle when the wiper arm was back on.
Also recommend taking a photo with the mobile phone of arrangement inside as you disassemble.

I'm now told by a friendly LR tech that the rear wiper motor is one of the FL2's failure points. Other than that he says they are great and that is not just in comparison with RRS / D3 but all cars. He also suggested that 27.5 to 29.0 mpg was about right for FL2 diesel consumption - little they can do to bring it up so If you are geeting more then don't complain!!

The rear wiper motor for the FL2 is made by Valeo.

For the first few years of the FL2 production, the product was licenced for LR use only, which means individuals couldn't buy the unit from Valeo directly. This period of licence has now ended and the part is available for about 60% less than LR charged for it.

I bought one and fitted it in under 10 minutes after it failed on our 2007 SE, the hardest part was clipping the plastic boot trim back on! 2014 Barolo black Metropolis

Just servuced my rear wiper assembly. What amaze's me is how they keep running, not why it has stopped.

Stripped all the rusty greasy paste out, cleaned it thourghly and reassembled with clean grease.

One point is that the park contact was quite worn, so had to bend that up slightly, don't think i'll get away with it quite as easily next time it stops.

My Discovery TD5 was the exact same state when opened up, guess 7 years is about there life without maintenance.

Make sure you have a very small torq's bit in your toolkit for removing the cover plate, tis quite small.

The water had got down the shaft and into the mech, that's why mined stopped working. Just cleaned it all out, wire brushed the mech and rebuilt. Be careful not to lose the plastic cap off of the back of the mech, was covered in grease and I nearly threw it away !!!

And test the motor without the blade and arm on first, have seen folk destroy wiper arm / scratch car by mounting before finding the park position.

Easy enough job to do.

Well I got round to fixing it, stripped it down and the amount of rust is unbelievable! So I cleaned it all up and Re greased it and I still didn't work. I ended up going to 3 scrap yards in Bolton and not one had a freelander in so I ended up get one from a fiesta mk6. Swapped the motors over thinking it was that, tried it and no. Swapped the yellow cog thinking it my be the contacts on the bottom of it and no still didn't work. There was only one more thing I could change and that was the housing that holds the bushes and magic it works.
Ending up costing me £30 over all.
Amount of rust inside the fiesta motor was none.

rear wiper motor warm, ive done a bad thing

Hello, second post, owner the fl2 for a few hours, read loads of posts about the rear wiper as mine isnt working, took things to bits, cant get them back together, sparks and now something is wrong!

Ive done a bad thing, i took the 2 screws out of the silver part of the motor and removed the silver casing slightly, dont know why, guess I read the posts too fast, when i realised i shouldnt take it to bits as i put it back together it sparjed and the silver case got warm, i pulled the fuse and the connector.....will my car catch fire in the night??!! (the wifes car actually!))

Help appreciated!

Oh and can anyone confirm or dismiss if this fits? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&...ID=EBAY-GB

the big silver casing covers the motor.
it does get warm as the motor run and it will spark if the cover isn't on, its normal, even my £350 makita drill motor sparks.

clean it up, re grease and check for wear on the bushes, if they are worn like mine was then replace with the Ford Fiesta bush.

You can not just swap the whole unit as the FL2 spindle (the bit that the wiper bolts on to) is longer, but all the inner parts are the same. I6 WITH GAS CONVERSION

Thanks Freel2 members. You just saved me some cash. Just cleaned and re-greased my rear wiper motor and the wiper is working perfectly again.
