If you have CCP credit card insurance it should cover lost keys. Household insurance may do same.

My Fob gave up a couple of weeks ago.
Had to get a new one@£134.
Took the old one apart very carefully and found the problems.
First problem was the same one as affects the old original Freelander.
There is a projection in the shape of a cross obn the inner top that makes contact with the circuit button.
This cross wears away on the front 2 buttons.
Secondly, the Battery, this is a rechargable one and is soldered to the terminals.
You can remove it and put a non rechargable on in place if you can use a soldering iron with care.
This should last 1-2 years before having to replace it (depends on how much it is used.
Important not to allow the dealers to de-commission the old unit when getting the new one.
I now use my old one without the case to use from the bedroom if the are any untoward activities going on in the night, scares the crap out of them when the alarm goes off.
You could add a bit of rubber in place of the worn cross in the case and glue it back together if you are desperate.

WARNING....do not buy second hand units that "just need programming" it could cost you a great deal more than you bargained for. Offset your Carbon emissions by boycotting Baked Beans and all Green Vegitables.

@EXPENCELANDER
worth noting you can replace the fob battery with a rechargable (I did) and it will worked properly (still using it now) - a year later)

I don't think I'd recommend using a non-rechargable as the dock would try to charge it!

although you stated you use it in the bedroom Embarassed 2002 Honda VFR800

I PIGGY-BACKED MY NEW NON RECHARGABLE BATTERY ON TOP OF THE OLD ONE AS I was afraid of losing the stored info. On the old units I believe you only have about half a minute to change over and the soldering needs to be done with great care or the circuit can get fried Laughing (is the new rechargable battery dealer suppied or own source?) Offset your Carbon emissions by boycotting Baked Beans and all Green Vegitables.

fob doesn't lose any info when not on battery as it is one-time programed which is why 2nd hand is no good!!!!

battery was easily sourced via e$ay for about £8 2002 Honda VFR800

Keyfob

Just thought I would remind anybody that has a dead keyfob that you can change the battery in them. Just carefully split open the casing and de-solder the battery terminal, fit new battery and re-slder connection then you might have to superglue the casing back together. Done mine in April and still going strong. Very Happy

Anyone worked out if its possible to successfully charge the spare fob by another means rather than swapping every month or so?

mending a dead/half dead keyfob

Instructions for replacing the keyfob battery posted here, with apparently good results

http://www.landroversonly.com/forums/f11/l...ons-58270/

I have a half dead one (works randomly, so completely undependable for locking/unlocking the Landie)which I've been trying to take a charge, so far without success. So am contemplating the surgery recommended here, rather than spending £200 odd on a new one

Seems a few of you have done this successfully, so warming to the soldering iron idea

Hi, first post, so be gentle with me Shocked

Just got an 07 XS for my wife, and only came with one working fob !!! Surprise surprise. Have just opened it up and replaced the rechargeable cell in it and it is still not working. Battery has a charge but will still not open doors, stay in dash hole etc.

Does this mean it is totally knackered or is there something i have missed doing ?

Does it need recoding after being 'dead' for at least 3 years ? (previous owner never used it).

Is it a trip to LR dealer and part with £150 + for fob and programming ?

My missus is constantly losing the key for her car, so don't like they idea of not having my own key / a spare key.

Hi SIII
If the fob hasn't been programed to your wifes freely, it will need to be done,,, cost of a programme is around £35 / £40

Knackered key fob

Hi SIII - Lots on this on a different thread, see

http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic2178-60.html

It shouldn't need reprogramming, but might need more of a charge - after fitting the new battery mine came back to life after about 5 mins in the dock

Have fun!

Andy
