Possibly the splines to the PTU have worn and they are slipping under load on their way to failing completely. Mud and gravel will have the Haldex more engaged than normal mode. As the PTU is not far from the gear lever your perception of the source of the noise is likely correct. |

Thanks for the answer Bob. I was considering the same. But what makes me curious that it's a real banging noise its seriously banging trough the whole car like its tearing it apart.

When the splines completely fail there will be no noise, but the front wheels will spin when you set off on lock as you will be front wheel drive only.
