Extreme banging noise when haled locks on

Hey guys,
my new bought Freelander makes an extreme noise when the car locks the rear axle by the haldex.
It's a bit strange. I did change the haldex pump, its a 4th gen by the way and sealed of an hole on the accumulator.
The sound is a bit equivalent like a slipping wheel on a FWD car when the TC locks it(so really loud)
I know its most likely that the sound comes from the haldex but strange enough I would locate the sound coming from somewhere under the gear lever.
If I disconnect the pump the car makes no noise whatsoever.
Is there a chance the sound is coming of the PTU or the prop shaft? Or would a failure of those also
create a noise without the Haldexpump connected?
Maybe someone had a similar noise in the past.
Edit: The Car does transfer momentum to the rear. I did check on loose surface.
If you put the System to Mud and Gravel the noise appears almost always even under light load.
If you leave it in normal mode it only appears under middle to heavy load
Best Regards

Possibly the splines to the PTU have worn and they are slipping under load on their way to failing completely. Mud and gravel will have the Haldex more engaged than normal mode. As the PTU is not far from the gear lever your perception of the source of the noise is likely correct.

Thanks for the answer Bob. I was considering the same. But what makes me curious that it's a real banging noise its seriously banging trough the whole car like its tearing it apart.
Unfortunately I can't upload a mp3 here. I hope you can hear it by the link.
I did that recording in mud mode.
its sounds like its some part of a driveshaft or propshaft. But all theses parts do also turn without the haldex engaging and without the Pump connected the whole car is peaceful quiet.

I did lift a rear wheel for checking the haldex coupling. Without the engine running the wheel is free to turn. When turning the car on it does lock the rear tight to the front. It's impossible to turn the wheel with engine running.

When the splines completely fail there will be no noise, but the front wheels will spin when you set off on lock as you will be front wheel drive only.
The FL2 has a very stiff chassis, so noise travels, I was convinved that the noise was a rear wheel bearing - the gearbox output splines and the PTO input splines were slipping, it was VERY noisey.

The front PTO has also been known to fail internally. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
