Thanks Riverblanche. I don't understand why there should be a problem. Decades ago Rover were using something similar and I don't recall those deteriorating so quickly or even at all.

TBH, I see no advantage of having the strips. All they do is trap water anyway,whether they're in good condition or not making it even more likely that the wheel arches will eventually succumb to rust. Save your money, spend it on diesel instead.

Hello again folks. The next question is about tyres. 1 of the front tyres on the car (on the front) is much newer than the rest- 7mm rather than 4ish- which I gather is not good for Freelanders so we're having a nice new set of All Season tyres fitted. When we looked at the spare we see that it's a Hankook Dynapro AS which we understand is an all season tyre but the size is 225/65/R17 rather than 235/65/R17. From searching on here it seems that the 225 tyre is fine as a spare, LR supplying spares of this size, but it seems there have been problems with these Hankook tyres in the past with tread separation. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of these tyres? The big question is "are they safe"? or shopuld we replace the spare as well?

As a result of changing the tyres we have 3 Goodyear Efficient Grip with at least 4mm tread on them and 1 Landsail Trailblazer with at least 7mm tread for sale at whatever we can get for them if anyone is interested.

Yes I've done that-it's how I found out that the 225 tyre was actually a size LR supplied as a spare. I thought at first it was the previous owner being penny pinching. I couldn't see the sense in having a different sized spare when the difference was so small and a full size spare apparently fits in the space available.

The steel wheel spare does have a 225/65/17 tyre fitted. I've an unused one sitting in my spares shed.
As it's an emergency use only wheel, it has a 50MPH sticker fitted, and should only be used to get the vehicle to a tyre workshop to have the road tyre repaired or replaced.
In a few miles, I can't see the odd size damaging the AWD system, but if it was used long term, then there is the potential for damage. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

We'd considered that Bobupndown but the new tyres are all season tyres and the Landsail is not whereas the Hankook apparently is. I daresay the Landsail will fit the steel rim as the difference in width is marginal but what would be the effect of having 1 "summer" tyre and 3 all seasons? Would it be detrimental to the handling?

As the Hancook is new, why not just leave it as is? It's only a spare to get you to a tyre service centre. There a plenty of vehicles that don't have spare tyres these days, so the Freelander is good in that respect.

Or find a good identical alloy to use as a spare, and put a new tyre on that?
That's what I did, but only because a good matching alloy came up cheap locally.

Hi,

I would go with Bob or Nodge if your putting a set of 4 new on then you only need a Spare, so use the landsail (ditchfinder!) or leave the Hankook on ( I would not be keen or the 225 size thought!) and have you looked at the DOT code on it for its age

I like to use my spare in rotation with the rest of the wheels if its a matching alloy, but the spare is normally the "best of rest" when you fit new ones.

and just to add an alternative option I would have sourced a used tyre to match the others at 4mm and put that on the alloy and the spare put the ditchfinder on, Autumn time I would then go for a set of 4 Winter rated all season tyres

New tyres are on and look good . Tracking checked and corrected (only marginally out-think that was a bit of a con but done now) I think we'll stick with the Hankook spare for the time being. Had a good look at it today and couldn't see any signs of deterioration. Next thing to check is behind the wheel arch liners to see whether any mud has collected and any rust has set in. Has anybody done that?
