Smoke coming out of the exhaust and strange continuous noise

Hi guys,

I am worried about the amount of smoke my FL2 HSE TD4 is producing mainly during first, second and third gear changes. This happens even if I make a very smooth start and even if until 3rd gear I keep the engine below 2.000 RPM... 4 months ago, when I had my annual service I asked them at the service garage about the matter and they told me not to worry... Is this a turbo leaking problem?
As for the noise, it has appeared 3-4 days ago since I started using the climate control (hot summer in Cyprus has just began!) But even with the climate control switched-off I can hear it. It is a continuous sound from the engine which is coming from the "root" of the steering wheel" and it is like parallel engine working with the original one.

Can anyone make a comment?[/img]

Hi there Paniscy,

I see this is your first message to us, welcome to the forum.

I have to say that with over 95,000 kms on the clock I have never had a problem with exhaust smoke, this is not normal, I would ask the dealer to investigate it for you. Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!
Company cars ... a thing of the past - May 2013.

Colour of smoke gives a good indication of where it comes from. Black? White? Grey? Misty buff?

Thing to remember is most common rail and PD diesels these days smoke like a very smokey thing anyway, you can always tell the quick ones cos they smoke so damn much Laughing

Re the noise at the steering column sounding like a second engine, your not driving along going 'brum brum' are you? 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. Mine and my dogs Storm and Sky

Cyprus 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Stornoway Grey

Hi Paniscy,

I am from Cyprus too. Do you drive an auto or a manual FL2? I drive a manual and i have noticed that during night when there is another car behind me with its lights on and i am accelerating fast then i can see from the rear view mirror that there is smoke behind me (the lights of the car behind me help me to see the smoke). I was also wondering at the begining if that is okey since new diesel cars don't produce a lot of smoke this days but after using the car for 21000 KM without any problem then i stopped worrying, i am thinking that it might also be on the fuel quality that we have in Cyprus.
Please let us know what was the dealer's feedback on this Freelander 2 GS TD4, Stornoway Grey, Manual, called BEAST!!!

The steering wheel problem is a known on all FR2, this is a problem with the hydo pump and the steering weal design. Speak with service in Cyprus. For the smoke don’t worry.

Hi guys,

As for the smoke problem, it seems that I don't have to worry any more. As for the noise, when I took it to the Land Rover authorised dealer in Nicosia, while waiting for a mechanic to come and test drive to listen to the noise by himself I had the car switched-on for about 15 minutes. As soon as the guy came in to drive it the sound had disappeared!!!! He came back and he told me there was not a strange sound while his test drive. Then he sat on the passenger's seat and he told me to drive. Then I realised that the sound had disappeared!!!
But the last 3-4 weeks the sound is back again!! I think it is a gearbox problem like Hadjista (from Cyprus from his post some months ago). Please let me know whether your noise stops when you press clutch e.g 1st gear - acceleration and when you press clutch for second gear no noise is produced.

My friend Hadjista, do you know any details for the Freelander 2 Owners Club in Cyprus? Question
You can contact me at panosierides@gmail.com
