I know in a perfect world to go solo green laning it's probably best to have 2 winches on the car, a chinook helicopter to follow and enough clothing that would keep a dog warm in the arctic circle. But me and my partner don't intend to dedicate the car to full time off roading so paying out for winches and the like is a bit much right now. We just want to head out in our local area and investigate what the local green lanes are like when they "open" in April for a couple of hours at a time or so.

I'd like to think both me and my partner are quite versatile people and can think of multiple different ways to solve a problem. So what do you suggest for basic kit/tools/must haves when green laning? My first thoughts are obviously food and water incase we were to get stuck. A few 5 Ton ratchet straps that can be tied together if necessary and used as a basic form of a winch? A decent spade, some boards to go under the wheels for traction, some grit or sand in the boot?

They were just a few things that come to my my mind. Over to everyone else for suggestions if you would be so kind. Feel free to also say it's either all the kit (winches and the likes) and go green laning or don't go green laning at all if you don't have the kit if that is the case.

Knowledge of the lane first,
it's condition at different times of the year and how the weather affects it,
if it's flinty, then a second tyre may be of use,
Ropes and shackles are fine if you have someone to recover you,
winches are a high investment and can be lethal in the wrong hands
and of cause they only work IF you have a good secure anchor point, (not conifers)

My advice, before you do anything else, check out the forums on https://glass-uk.org.
I would also advise at the very least, a 2 vehicle convoy. Getting stuck will be the least of your worries if you also have a medical emergency too. I mean, what happens if you get stuck and one of you takes a tumble trying to recover the vehicle ? I've seen it happen, especially with novices who don't know how to recover their vehicle safely. Twisted, broken ankles on slippy ground and people who've bashed themselves on tow hitches - very painful. Had these people been in a solo vehicle, then they'd have to wait while someone else walked to the nearest road before they could get help or mobile phone reception. You may also be somewhere inaccessible to an ambulance, or with nowhere for the air ambulance to land.

Hehehehe thanks everyone for all your serious and non-serious comments. It has all been taken onboard. Me and my partner are going to ease ourselves into the off roading world by going to a pay and play day in early April and trying to stick to the easy bits as best as we can. Then maybe look at any easy group green laning trips that we can attend.

Best & easiest thing you can do for off-road is let tyres down.
