Dual (now triple) compressor, air tank & water trap

Finally getting a second compressor installed. The first one works well but I just wanted to have redundancy. The second compressor still needs to be mounted but the volume of air is impressive with 2 compressors. The only issue is the 56 amps drain so the engine will have to be running if pumping up tyres remotely.

I have been testing the set up using the old LR battery which I recently replaced. The battery is still in reasonable shape & good enough for testing things & avoiding having the engine running.

I have also installed a moisture trap (I will make a bracket so stand it up while in the outback).

Also noticed that after 10 minutes running the original compressor which has a 120mm computer fan moving air over the electric motor, cylinder, mini tank with heatsink, you can put your hand on any part as it is not too hot. The second compressor it too hot to touch so I will mount a fan to cool it.

I have 4 litre tank but due to lack or space I might not install it. But it would be nice!

I removed the bracket for the first compressor, modified it & reinstalled it. Bug_er of a job, but the worst bit is done, just a little bit of tidying up to do. Also made a new power cable as the first power cable was only for one compressor, it was a bit light for 60 amps.

The ARB twin compressor with 4L tank. It was a bitch to remove the plumbing fittings pre installed on the end of the tank, spanner & a hammer did the trick, but it took quite a bit of bashing. The end of the tank is very solid so it is ok to bash away for leverage while kneeling on the tank with as much weight as possible.

I don't know if I can stuff the tank anywhere but will try hard. Have noticed that the tank provides a bit extra dryness to the air, so it would be useful simply from this aspect.

With a tank, even though very small, it makes a serious bit of kit.

Upgrade option: second tank! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Nice job mate, did you ever consider one of these.

I suspect it's probably a bit cumbersome to fit under the seat though.

I did think of getting the dual compressor initially, but was not sure if I could get the whole thing in with enough clearance & the hose connection out of the top was a problem. The compressor could be mounted upside down. With hindsight I should have gone with this straight away. But the advantage I have with 2 single compressors, is if one fails I can run off one unit & only have to shift the pressure switch & swap the air hoses.

I put the compressor under the drivers seat because it lifts up, easier than the passenger seat for access with all the initial measuring & fitting the thing in. But a dual compressor should go under the passenger seat & the air tank under the drivers seat with different air connectors. This air tank does not fit under the passenger seat. Possibly with electric seats it is impossible to fit anything under either seat. You also need to by able to remove air tanks & drain them out regularly, or mount them vertically so you can drain them out from an end fitting.

The biggest issue with all these compressors is just how hot they run after 10 minutes or so. You can't touch the things, they are that hot, motor, cylinder & connection to air hose. The heat is dangerous. I have used an old 120 mm computer server fan which is 0.9 amps & pushes a lot more air than the standard fans. The heatsink fins I added internally & externally together with air movement over the compressor cools the air even further.

The red internal heatsink were 2 heatsinks in 3 rows per compressor, cut carefully to size with a very tight fit & forced in with a bench vice & a bit of massaging of the diameter initially (I used the red heatsinks as they were the cheapest!)

The external heatsinks were from Bu_nings, removed from a LED light fitting. I am sure a bit more searching would have found an easier option. But they work. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Here's another dual compressor you could have gone for and saved a couple of bucks.

I have a good quality standing bike pump. After 1000 plus cycles to pump up 4 x 4WD tires a few PSI, let alone from 12 PSI, 12 volt is the go. Also the bottom of the pump needs water poured over it for cooling to maintain compression.

In the outback in high temperatures & limited water I'm quite happy to go 12 volt, pump up as quick as possible & get back in the air conditioning!

Some people use air conditioning compressors for pumps which are the rolls royce for speed! http://www.endlessair.com.au/ if you can find room in the engine bay! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
