Quest TV - Electrifying Series 2 Land Rover

I have just watched this show and found it very interesting.

After a Full Restoration, a Tesla Motor was fitted between front and rear axles (instead of Central Transfer Box) to give full-time 4 wheel drive.

Very clever, but it must have cost a fortune.

Although I watched it as part of my TV Package, I cannot spot a way of watching it free. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

it was interesting, but I find when youve watched the first series and then the second, its all pretty much the same, I think they did a defender in the first series.

Quest is a FREE channel on FREEview, I can verify that as I do not pay for any TV package. Bow down

Its certainly a show for people with money, didnt he say the refurb of the body was £40,000, then its either £30 or £40,00 to stick electric stuff in. 2017 SEAT Ateca 4drive 2.0 xcellence (May 2022 -

got to admit that £90k for a car is a lot more than the average family run around.

Having said that PCP seems to make very expensive cars affordable - on paper at least Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

The point about needing to be well heeled is like for like the EV is more expensive than a ICE car whether this is for bog standard entry car or top of range vehicle.
Be interesting to see how surplus monthly disposable income will now be used as paying £500 plus for a vehicle may just be beyond the majority, certainly with inflation and recent price rises whether this be for EVs or ICE vehicles.
Maybe some people are in a better position financially but most are not Shocked

EV monthly’s are coming right down now apparently, just a look through some of the EV forums will show some of the “bargains”.

But of course with an EV your paying for the real cost of the battery pack which can easily put 150-300 on a monthly depending upon model compared to an ICE equivalent, but of course if charging mostly from home you can subtract the saving in fuel costs, our i3 saves us (or used to before lockdowns!) over £1800 a year which is £150 a month towards the monthly’s if leasing is your thing, which makes a big difference and even more so if your mileage is greater than our 10K (was) a year average.

It’s similar argument I have often with people who think leasing is the be all and end all of car buying, our i3 cost us just £150 per month from new over the past six years, far less than leasing and changing every three years.

Edit, just realised with a bit of man maths our i3 is costing us nothing now… Thumbs Up Rolling with laughter Regards

@Boxbrownie
Of course leading categorically isn’t buying. But that aside, how do the sums work such that the cost of an i3 (which costs, I believe, somewhere of the order of £35K) are £150 a month over six years or just over £10K?

I paid £32K new…..it’s now worth £18.5K so £13.5K depreciation over (just over actually) six years is roughly £187 a month, then take away the fuel savings of £150 per month….and it gets even better Very Happy Regards

So the fuel savings have more or less offset the depreciation? But you still had to find £32k to achieve those savings. No free lunches Smile

PCP just doesn't work for those who use their car rather than potter about - try putting in 35,000 a year and the calculators reject you. Bearing in mind we have just gone through Covid, I have managed 43k in two years, my busiest years being over 50k every year for 8 years.

For a laugh I have just put some figures in the LR website for a SE iPace:
Deposit £6.5k
Monthly payments £1030 x 36 = £37k
Excess mileage (11k a year as the maximum is 24k) = £66.5k

Total cost is £110k - for a £65.5k car
That leaves you with nothing to trade in against another car
The estimated fuel saving are in my mind a red herring, as they assume that you can charge at home.

Don't get me wrong. I would struggle to PCP a diesel DS with that mileage, but buy a year old one on HP and sell after 5 years - yes you are going to be in the 180k mileage region, but you still have the car as a deposit. Who is going to take the risk of a used EV (battery) with 180k on the clock as opposed to a good old "reliable" diesel?

What? Yes of course you have to access to the cash. But my point was that it is much cheaper to use your own cash (especially so now interest rates are non existent) than leasing/PCP/HP whatever.

The car has cost me £187 per month so far, and if you take away the fuel saving to me of £150 a month as well so far the new car has cost me just £37 per month.

That’s low enough for me to by loads of lunches Rolling with laughter Regards

My whole point was buying a car outright works out a lot cheaper than these PCP/Lease offers, nothing to do with fuel savings or mileage travelled, that’s a just a bonus for me because I came from a diesel ICE to full EV.

It’s the leasing route that the dealers all want you to take, it gets their figures up every three years without even trying, and the customer looses their deposit and pays for the depreciation and is left with zero at the end of the lease.

Sure if you the kind of person who “needs” to change their car every two or three years to keep appearances up with their neighbours and friends lease, but it cost a fortune. Regards

David
