First of all I’m a new member and I’m sorry I popped straight in here before introducing myself.

My name is Rich and I’m from County Durham. I’ve owned my freelander 2 now for around 18months and today, it suddenly decided to stop working. Wondering if any of you guys have come across this issue at all.

No eml showing to indicate a fault as such and it’s been working perfectly up until this issue, infact I’ve been using it today with no issue and it has over half a tank of diesel (so about 50 miles 😂).

So, when I start it up initially it starts and doesn’t appear to have any issues. Then after anything from 30 seconds to a minute it then cuts off. If you try to start it again, it just turns over and will turn over and attempt to start almost indefinitely. If you remove the key and put it back in however, it’ll turn start and do the whole cycle mentioned again running for up to a minute before switching itself off again.

It’s had a belt change about 20k ago, and it’s currently sitting on 103k. I’ve tried a hard reset and it doesn’t change anything.

Could be immobiliser or similar.

Also, what is the recent service history, have you changed the fuel filter recently for a cheap item. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Thanks for the reply.

I can’t read them and going to ring around local garages to see if someone can come out.

Service history is great, it’s due one in January, and it’s had one every year since new from looking over receipts. Seems it’s had a steering lock fault twice in the last 5 years that have been fixed by dealer at a cost of £500 each time.

Since I’ve owned it it’s had no issues at all other than this. Not missed a beat etc.

Hello and welcome. You can get a code reader on Amazon for around £40 or so that will at least start you on your way.

The frost thing I would do is pull the plug on your MAF sensor to confirm/eliminate that as the problem. It is situated to the left of the air filter box in the intake pipe. Pop up the red tab then release the plug from the sensor. Try to restart your engine. This sensor is actually a multi-sensor and can cause all sorts of weird problems. This costs you nothing to try and you can do it by torchlight

Just so you know, by disconnecting the MAF sensor the ECU resorts to a table of set MAF values. You can drive perfectly safely with this sensor unplugged, but the engine will not be as efficient as with it plugged in. New MAF sensor is about £70 and you can install it on the side of the road.

What’s the chances of this being crankshaft sensor related? And are they east to diagnose/rule out or is it a case of buying a new one to try.

****update, MAF unplugged but still having the issue.

If it were the crankshaft sensor that was dead the engine would not start at all.

Next thing to look at is whether there are any air bubbles moving through the clear fuel pipe from the fuel filter. It is no uncommon for cheaper fuel filters to leak air in to the system causing rough running and occasionally something worse. The clear pipe is hidden under the engine cover and the engine must be running to see the air bubbles.

Great, I’ve got a code reader ordered so we shall see if that kicks anything back.

Soon as the sun is up, il get under the bonnet and check that fuel pipe. Although I may have issues of bubbles only show when running as it won’t run :/

I did thinK I sussed after putting maf back on as it started and ran for about 2 mins, but then just cut out when I was debating on taking it for a quick run round the block. And now when I start it starts up then immediately cuts out.

Gutted, only car in the house and it’s Xmas shopping weekend 😂😅 I will let you know what I find tomorrow and if any codes come up, what they are.

I’ve gone to start the car today and it’s fired up and now working without failed again. Not sure why it was doing what it was doing so I’m going to put the code reader on it when it arrives. I’ll keep you all posted.

Not replaced anything. I had my car cleaned and not thinking but it didn’t start after it was washed. Not I’ve noticed inspection covers missing from bottom of windscreen (il try and get pics attached) and not sure if maybe pressure washer has got in there and it’s dried out over night?

There is no inspection cover missing there, your battery cover will slot into that (unless you have a missing battery cover).

Yes it’s missing the battery cover and it will cover both.
