FL2 Goose/trumpet under bonnet. 3.2 Si6. Weird noise for ya!

My FL2, Si6 has started making a new noise on cold starts. She only does it on cold starts and it doesn't last very long. The idle is a little rough sometimes when the sound is occurring but soon takes care of itself. Where do i start looking?
Thanks in advance.

Have you run over any geese recently? Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

I'm sure someone with knowledge of Si6 will be along shortly, but might be an idea to have a look at Volvo forums - same engine I believe & more Volvo's about. 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

That to me is a very noisy i6 TBH…….first thing to look at with that odd hooting is the drive belts, and pulleys. Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again......

Having said that and listening to the noise again it is quite regular…..another possibility is maybe some kind of vacuum being made and the hoot is when the pipe/valve (or whatever) gives in and releases the vacuum?

It is an odd one for sure. Regards

David

I get the same noise sometimes, and I have a brand-new belt and idler/tensioner. Replacing the PCV valve assembly mostly took care of it although sometimes it still does it on a cold morning.

Guessing some blow-by around rings or maybe valve stem seals. The noise may be normal functioning of the PCV valve? I actually replaced the PCV when the oil dipstick started popping out, solved that problem too.

Bypass the PCV by removing the oil fill cap.

Does the sound stop?

If yes then replace the PCV.

I no then reply here and I will suggest other things to look at.

Good luck

Paul

Thanks for the replies all. She does sound.like a bag of nails when the phone is really close, scary! Believe it or not, she's super smooth and quiet in real life - other than a weird, rhythmic honk Laughing

I'll try the oil filler cap thing in the morning Thumbs Up

I have only recently replaced the PCV and done an oil and filter. Still, it does sound a bit vacuumy.

Tar.

Craig,

From our Friends at Volvo

Quote:
Perform a crankcase ventilation test according to VIDA. Using the tool specified in
VIDA, the gauge will seem “out of range”. Normal PCV vacuum at idle for the Si6 and
Si6T engines is between -0.2 kPa and -1.0 kPa.

If that makes sense to you then no need to read further

For me Inches of Mercury are more familiar units.

At idle a typical engine is around 18 inches of Mercury

Converting 1.0 Kpa to inches of Mercury equals 0.29 inches of Mercury

The negative number from Volvo just indicates that you have a Vacuum in the engine and not a positive pressure.

This is a difficult pressure to measure (it is very low)

To over come this difficulty the Volvo owners will remove the oil fill cap and place a disposable glove on the valve cover where the fill cap was and check to see if the glove inflates or deflates.

Inflates = PCV not functioning (no vacuum)

Deflates or stays the same = PCV functioning

If the glove rapidly gets sucked into the valve cover then the PCV is applying too much vacuum to the engine

Hopefully this make sense

Note: if the glove inflates until the HONK and then deflates and the cycle repeats please make a video I will fall out of my chair laughing if the cause and effect are that clear.

Good luck

Paul

That's a brilliant test! I'll try that next.

I've just removed the filler cap. The rhythmic 'honking' stopped and became a 'beeeeeeeeep' which is interesting Neutral

I'll try and video it in the morning.

If it was the new pcv/cam cover I just installed, how would the fault manifest itself mechanically....? Would it build pressure while driving until it caused a momentary loss of power that feels like a.misfire....?
