E10 petrol will contain up to 10% renewable ethanol. This is intended to help reduce CO2 emissions, but we know that some of you may have concerns about how this will affect your petrol tools. We recommend in all of our owners’ manuals that you should only use high-quality brand-name petrol with a minimum octane rating of 90, but we can reassure you that petrol with an ethanol content of 10% or less, like the new E10 petrol will not cause a problem with your STIHL petrol tool.

In fact, our STIHL M-Tronic engines can still deliver full power when run using petrol with an ethanol content of up to 25% (E25).

However, petrol with an ethanol content of more than 10% can cause running problems in engines with a manually adjustable carburetor so should not be used in such engines.

Makita says much the same as Stihl

"Here are some tips regarding fuel usage to help you navigate this change.

Use 98-E5 unleaded fuel. 98-E5 fuel contains a maximum of 5% ethanol.
Minimum octane number 87 (91RON).
The use of alkylate fuel is permitted.
The use of 95-E10 fuel (which replaces EURO 95 with a maximum of 10% ethanol) is permitted, but it ages quicker. Especially when the fuel remains in the machine for a long time, it is advisable to add a solid additive.
When using Makita machines with two-stroke engines, add the correct two-stroke engine oil in the correct proportion to the fuel to be used, as described in the owner's manual. For this, it is best to use Makita two-stroke engine oil, available from your Makita dealer in 0.1L packaging (article number 980 008 606) or 1L container (article number 980 008 607 ). The use of two-stroke alkylate fuel is permitted.
Warning :
Do not use any unapproved fuel, such as E15 and E85.
Always use clean, fresh fuel.
Do not adjust your engines to alternative fuels.
Using unapproved and / or poor quality fuels and oils can damage your engine parts.
For four-stroke engines, the use of engine oil is necessary for the engine. Check the engine oil level before use (also when using for the first time) and use the correct oils, as described in the operating instructions. For this, preferably use Makita engine oils, available from your Makita dealer.
Storage :
Fuel that is stored for more than 30 days can age. Expired fuel can lead to gum and acid deposits in the fuel system or on critical carburetor parts." Jules

Apparently some people have been buying the new E10 in Jerry cans, adding water to it, because ethanol sticks to water. Then then leave it for around 24 hours while the water and ethanol sperate from the rest of the fuel, and then they extract it. You cant really get all of the Ethanol out though.

you'd need a lot of jerry cans to do that for your car.
I suppose it depends upon how quickly E10 degrades metals and plastic parts but for older lawnmowers and chainsaws etc it may be worthwhile in the long term. Jules

Is it not easier to just purchase premium E5 petrol

I keep some petrol in a can in the garage - just a couple of litres for cleaning things. Today, went to use what was left (a couple of hundred ml) and it had turned into syrup. Never seen that happen before - it must have been E10 fuel. Jules

Yes it is - Ive since gone out to the shed and drained the mowers, and run them till dry.
Trouble is its easy to empty the fuel tank of a chainsaw or hedge trimmer not so much for a large mower.
Time to get the Pela pump out again. Jules
