I bow to your superior knowledge Alex, but are any of the friction material type,. or more dog type clutches? my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Not sure what you mean - sorry my English is failing sometime - but below one of the clutches inside the box.
It is a pack of alternating friction material and solid steel.
See that the teeth of solid steel are on the exterior of the pack while the friction material has the teeth on the inside.
Each connected to different power flows routes inside the box.

And more of the transmission on the video below.

Interesting that there are very few actual gear wheels in the box but very complicated valve block, the 9 speed must be a nightmare to work on. The clutches would seem to not take much wear as they are pre engaged and just lock up with little or no speed difference, bit like if you get the rpm correct you don't need a clutch except to start and stop. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

It appears to be complicated, but it's not.
There are two sets of gears.
The engine torque first drives a Lepelletier simple planetary gear set.
From the simple planetary gear set, it is transferred to a Ravigneaux double planetary gear set.
Locking the corresponding ring or planet or sun, a different demultiplication/gear is obtained.
And locking is obtained by oil pressure and through those clutches.
See below.

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Orkney Grey

Oils/fluids done today as much as they could be. Buzz has gone in 2nd gear, mechanic told me it was the exhaust shielding rubbing on the driveshaft (thank goodness for that) so a bit happier about that.

Seems a bit smoother & quieter too. Now booked in for full service & inspection early August.

Hopefully they will not find anything wrong & I can then relax with the car. 2014 Freelander 2 HSE Orkney Grey. Now sold.

I keep pushing the escape button but I am still here.
