Has anybody actually taken off their EGR to clean/replace it

As it says really, has anyone here actually taken their EGR off themselves to work on it, be it to clean it or replace it? I think mine is sticking, and the car is out of warranty, so its likely down to me to do.

By the looks of it, there are 2 parts to it, a EGR cooler section, and the EGR valve itself. I've read that the coolant needs drained etc etc, but looking at the parts, the cooler (with the coolant pipes attached) is only bolted onto the valve with no coolant joins. So in theory I could unbolt the 2 parts, leaving the cooler all plumbed up.

but has anyone actually done the work that could tell me if this was possible?

Thought I would add to this ... closer look at the part mouldings shows that the coolant does route round both sections ... so coolant does need drained regardless. ho hum.

Mine was sticking two and a half year back and I repaced it with a used one. Actually I did only half the job myself, I dismounted the EGR valve from a car with some collision damage, but when I discovered how much work this was I spoke with the LR dealer and asked if they could put this used EGR valve on to my car. This was now problem for them. The repair time for this job was 3,5 hours, but they used 5,5 hours on the job! (I just paid for 3,5)
You do not have much space to work on here so I do not recommend anyone to do this themselves.
It is possible to deactivate EGR in the ECU and blind off the tube, but you need special equipment to read out the data from the ECU and flash it back.

would like to learn more on this topic.I think the wifes maybe leaking so causing my coolant loss.Is it not possible the clamp the coolant pipes so no need to drain system? anyone got any pics of the set up?

I'll try and take some pictures when I do it. Looking at the tech manual, it does look like rubber piping, but fairly chunky stuff, and also space is very tight.

I think i'm going to pull it apart for a clean, re-assemble and fill with plain water for coolant as a test. If that solves the issue, i'll re-drain and refill with anti-freeze to the correct mixture. no point wasting £30-£40 quid on coolant.

If it doesn't work, then i'll buy a replacement egr and egr pipe ( the one that runs over the top of the engine) and fit that.




(hate the whole EGR principle ... nothing but a bodge that simply delays issues till later life)

Exhaust Gas Recirclation system. Takes some of the exhaust gas and adds it back into the air intake just after the MAF sensor.

Ahh ok, so a bit like an afterburner type of idea. So would I be right in thinking that all this 2so malarkey would help to keep it clean if they are right about it's high temp burn off etc?  MY2014 SD4 XS

Possibly so along with helping to keep the exhaust side of the turbo clean reducing problems with the variable pitch mechanism. I'm unable to confirm or deny whether 2so has any effect as I don't have access to two fl2 engines that have been run like for like with and without 2so to compare.

Just in name... In reality, quite the oposite.
The afterburning used on jet engines is for increasing power/thrust, by injecting fuel after the turbine, one of side efects being increasing burning temperature.
It's known that NOx are produced at high temperatures and therefore,
The EGR is for reducing power and therefore reducing burning temperature by injecting gas/air that lacks oxigen. And the exhaust gases are just right for that.

Salt water ingress in EGR valve

HI!
I kept my old EGR valve which was replaced two and a half year back. The reason it was sticking was rust in the bearing. I broke it open to have a look.

Ok so that kina makes sense, so on the one hand you want to create power but on the other you want to reduce the burn temp so not to produce NOx.

It all seems a long way from the 'squeeze, bang' principle which is how I understood the process! And far too technical for me these days, let's just be glad it all works as it should.  MY2014 SD4 XS

Hi there, yes even old Discovery has an E.G.R. valve. The clue is in the name recirculation. The idea was to make exhaust cleaner but all it achieved on the old Disco was that it reduced power and worsened fuel consumption and when you only have 111 bhp pushing 2.25 tons along it was a struggle. We always removed them, very simple take off the plate and replace an induction hose. I must admit though I wouldn't just leap into a FL2 and try to remove it, at least not without a lot of reserch and TBH if it ain't broke don't fix it or fix it until it is Shocked Shocked Shocked

Is the egr from the fl2 specific to it or is it a ford/peugeot part? Isn't the engine from one of these manufacturers
