Confused by battery sellers

Hi sorry to go back to the same old question but we need some help on a new battery for 2009 Freelander 2 Auto.

Using the battery search service by car registration number provided by both Mattery Megastore and Tayna they say we need a AGM battery. We thought that AGM batteries were only for stop/start cars. Our FR2 is an auto so cannot be a stop/start. Are we correct?

As our car is used for a lot of short journeys, along with a couple of longer journeys each month, we thought that something like a F18 Varta would a good bet. Any views on this battery?

Many thanks

I’ve recently fitted a Varta F18 from Battery Megastore.
Impressive service and more importantly, the battery is too.
I also discovered that door locks that worked intermittently now work perfectly. Must be that extra 5 Ah over the one it replaced.
I have no connection to Battery Megastore other than that of a satisfied customer.

Hello mummlylula, I have had a multitude of batteries on my fl2, my most recent is a Varta F19, purchased in October which has 660 cold crank amps, and since fitment which I have never had before is the heated front screen comes on at first start. One member of the forum highlighted this so it’s not an issue. Plus my cold start issue isn’t an issue.
My headlights don’t flicker anymore and also the dash lights,(earth cables previously cleaned) also the additional earth to starter bolt). They did with previous battery a cheap AGM from Halfords. would 100% recommend a varta F19.

My F19 cost me £98.00 from The battery megastore and a five year replacement written warranty.

I was fortunate to be working in Bristol and called to collect on the way home. Straight of the shelf fully charged. They were so easy to find, just of the M5.

FWIW You can use a AGM on any car - its just not really necessary on a car without stop/start where a wet flooded battery is fine (and cheaper)

Also some stop/start cars now come with EFB batteries (like my Fiesta ST) instead of the more expensive AGM - a sort of half way house. Jules

Am needing a battery myself for my 63 plate but as with pretty much everything else mechanical, I'm a bit clueless Crying or Very sad
Been on to Tayna site, input reg and its giving me a 096 and here's where the fun starts. Their recommended is an Enduroline 12v 75ah 700a but they also do a Varta E38 12v 74ah 750a. What's the difference in the numbers? If it makes any odds, the car's not stop-start, is not used for towing etc and is my daily runner; I'm mindful that it has to live outdoor so subjected to the cold weather.
Thanks

some cars need agm batteries, even without stop start, because of the way they recharge ie on overun and when braking,(smart charging)

The reason they recommended a Euroline is because that range is the most profitable for them . There is no free lunch in this world . The thing to do is a bit of investigation to find out who make all these brands of batteries. For example Halfords are Uasa

My query concerned the variance in the numbers (12/75/700 as compared to 12/74/750) more than the brand

12 is the Voltage, 75 (or 74) is the amp/hours and the last number is the cold cranking amperage.
Apart from the first number, 12, the higher the numbers the more powerful, and generally more expensive, the battery.
You just have to decide how much power you need. I would have thought 75 aH was not quite enough and would be looking for about 80 aH.
Somebody more technical than me will be able to explain it in more detail.

Tayna recommend an 096 pattern battery, but check the measurements of your old battery. The 096 is shorter than the original battery. I fitted a 110 pattern battery (Bosch S4010) which is same size as old battery and bigger capacity.

Also, mail order batteries may appear cheaper unless you need help under warranty. Tayna told me my I had to pay carriage to return a faulty battery to them at 2 years old, which was non refundable as battery was over 6 months old. You are also without vehicle whilst battery is away, even if they agree replacement.

I will always buy local now, even if more expensive. Might prove cheaper and more convenient in long run. Andy
